828d78c0666a3b61a79b4826380b1b34In today’s world, we are consuming more power than ever before. Between all the smartphones, computers, water heaters and the lights on our ceilings, we often don’t think about how much electricity we are using, and most of that energy isn’t coming from renewable sources, either. It is our responsibility to make sure that we are doing our part in spending less energy and conserving our planet’s resources. But how do we let go of the things that we need on such a basic level, such as lighting? Well, the good news is: you don’t have to give it up! A few simple modifications to your daily habits are all that is needed to make your home more eco-friendly. So let’s see what things we can do to make lighting up our days more energy-efficient: (more…)

ag-renewable-enery-mainIn the first half of 2017, Germany set a new record for renewable energy use. The country, which is a longtime clean energy leader, got 35 percent of its energy from renewable sources. On certain especially windy and sunny days, Germany has received as much as 85 percent of its power from renewables. (more…)

17191272_10209535149549675_250287909126640743_nI attended a meeting of the Citizen’s Climate Lobby in Santa Barbara this morning, where our small group joined 189 others around the country on a videoconference.  This virtual gathering featured two fabulous speakers who both made compelling and uplifting presentations on the group’s plan to put a price on carbon.

Called “carbon fee and dividend,” it proposes a fee on all fossil fuels entering the U.S. market (at the mine, well, or port) at a certain dollar amount per ton of carbon, that is distributed to all U.S. citizens as a dividend. (more…)

The basic thrust of all this is exactly what we’ve been saying at 2GE since its inception: (more…)

160502-770x293A commenter remarked recently that consumers can’t be forced to adopt eco-sensitive values. He goes on to say that his neighbor recently offered him a ride in his new Rolls-Royce Phantom, and says, “This huge automobile with its 12 cylinder, 6.8 liter engine and luxurious appointments costs nearly $1 million.” (more…)

ClimateWomanLots of folks wonder what our civilization will look like as the effects of climate change become more pronounced.  What happens when the amount of arable farm land falls, potable water gets scarce, and hundreds of millions of people’s ancestral homes are under water?  Some speculate that the result is a population so desperate that it becomes ungovernable.   (more…)

ub2As you consider the meme here, realize that Americans generally have had the concept of UBUNTU programmed out of us by our consumer/capitalist society that is as fundamental to our being and as invisible a part of our lives as the air we breathe.

Yet there’s still a flame of UBUNTU flickering inside each of us, which can never be extinguished, as it’s literally a part of our DNA as human beings.

1431106971385The concept discussed in this video is funny, IMO, as it combines a good idea (highly efficient lighting powered by a renewable resource) and a gross misunderstanding of basic science.  There is no energy in gravity; the energy lighting the lamp comes from the human who converted some of the chemical energy derived from the food he ate into potential energy stored in a stone he lifts against the force of gravity.

1-RIzYV_qPs5tQbfeeF8me1gHere’s an article in “Think Progress” called “Mississippi realizes how to make a clean coal plant work: Run it on natural gas”  in which the organization’s founder and editor, Joe Romm, writes, “After wasting $7.5 billion, the state realizes its coal-to-gas plant should just skip the coal.”

I’m not sure about the gerund “wasting”; isn’t it a bit “over the top?”  If it costs less than $10 billion to come to an understanding that clean coal has no future, I might conclude that this experiment was worth every dime, insofar as it means we can all quietly move on and begin to eliminate the burning of coal from the face of the Earth as quickly as we possibly can.

download (5)The importance of being energy efficient is increasing amongst Americans. People are looking for ways to reduce their energy consumption. Many are buying appliances that use less energy, but one thing that some people do not think about is how roofing can help. The following are a few ways that roofing helps make a home a little more energy efficient. (more…)
