Excellent point. The problem is that we live in a world in which there appears to be no penalty that accrues to bad behavior, and so many good people say, “Oh, what the heck.”
If a U.S. president can be a pathological liar and overt criminal, what’s the imperative for the common American to be fair and honest?
Fortunately, some people keep standards of decency in place for themselves, and are not corrupted by the atrocities committed by the rich and powerful, but let’s not kid ourselves: these last six years have had a terrible effect on our nation’s overall moral compass.

The Author Here Has a Dream
I don’t share it.
If Trump somehow dies before he’s indicted, tried, convicted and imprisoned, tens of millions of people will go on believing that our democracy is rigged in favor for the Democrat elites (or the Deep State, or whatever), and, almost as bad, that Trump was an honest and effective servant of the American people.
Of course, a great number of these people believe that climate change is a hoax, that a college education does more harm than good, that whites are the supreme race, and that vaccinations are of no medical value, and often lethal. In other words, evidence has no value, in which case, what happens to Trump is immaterial to a significant percentage of his supporters.
Having said that, one has to believe that setting the record straight and restoring rule of law will go a long way towards re-establishing justice and sanity to a nation that has been without both for far too long.

The U.S. Midterms
If Republicans can convince voters that they and only they can curb inflation, get tough on crime, and prevent immigrants from stealing their jobs, it seems possible that they’ll emerge victorious in the midterms. But on the other issues that matter to Americans they fall flat on their faces: abortion, racism, the rise of evangelical Christianity / prayer in schools, halting environmental collapse, protection of democracy / January 6th, gun violence, support for Ukraine, quality education, public health, and voting rights.
Something else to keep in mind: Voters who are extremely concerned about abortion rights are almost guaranteed to elect Democrats. By contrast, those who worry about the economy are not slam-dunk votes for Republicans, given the low unemployment rate, falling gas prices, and rapidly recovering stock market.
Clarence Thomas Violated the Law
There are plenty of goings on in American politics that make no sense, but allowing Clarence Thomas to play a continuing role in bringing justice to Donald Trump for his attempt to overthrow the U.S. federal government is probably the single most insane aspect of all of this.
Thomas’s wife Ginny urged the Trump White House to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election, but this wasn’t sufficient cause for the Supreme Court justice to recuse himself from cases related to the matter? Seriously?
In situations like these, recusal isn’t an option to be taken by refined and honorable gentlemen; it’s a legal requirement.
Do All These Idiots Actually Believe Their Claims?

I’m not so sure. I’ve always been suspicious of the ludicrous claims people make. Does Trump believe he won the 2020 presidential election? Does Alex Jones believe the bereaved Sandy Hook Elementary School families are paid actors?
At another level, does any intelligent person honestly believe in “originalism?” This is the principle that asserts that the U.S. Constitution should be interpreted in the way it was understood in 1789?
Sure, there are people who profess to believe that all gun laws are unconstitutional, but are they sincere? Do they honestly believe that Thomas Jefferson would have allowed insane people to walk through grocery stores with AR-15s in a day when these war weapons are being used to shoot thousands of our little children to death?
Of course not. These people are simply disingenuous. They cherry-pick specific lines from the Constitution that support their demented (usually profit-driven) positions.

There Must Be Republicans Who Can No Longer Put Up with the Lunacy
Not sure about the first part of the meme here. There have to be some Republicans who simply have had enough of the utter insanity of the GOP platform and are refusing to vote for things like bans on abortion, the Big Lie, white supremacy, environmental collapse, the reject of science in policymaking, teaching Christianity in schools, tax breaks for billionaires, and the further gutting of public education.
The second part, however, is indisputable. We can and must outnumber them.

Blatant Contradictions Don’t Concern Republican Voters
Clearly, the Republican platform “we’re tough on crime” doesn’t apply to things like fraud, extortion, witness intimidation, election tampering, inciting insurrection/sedition conspiracy, and theft of classified documents.
