If I were protesting at George Washington University, I’d be citing Thomas’ treason, i.e., not recusing himself from cases in which his wife had personal interests, including overthrowing the United States government.

Here’s a coincidence: I found the meme here, just minutes after hitting “publish” on my post on the new $700 billion spending package that passed the U.S. House of Representatives, containing $370 billion for climate and the environment.

I wrote: The problem really is that GHG emissions in the US and the EU are holding steady (which isn’t good) but those in Asia are going through the roof, which is terrible. This is an international problem, and any “solution” that fails to address it accordingly is largely a waste of time and resources.

An old school chum who went on to become a professor of constitutional law at Georgetown and I were talking about the coup attempt, during which I wrote: “I’ll never forget what you wrote in my yearbook: words to the effect of ‘Sadly, you’ll probably spend this summer on the golf course.   What you should be doing is following Watergate; this is one of the most interesting and important times in our country’s history.’”

Knowing that my focus is environmental stewardship, he asked, “Hi Craig.  Don’t know whether to laugh or be embarrassed about that golf comment!  Speaking of important stories, what are your thoughts about the Senate Dems’ climate deal?”

My response:

I’m surprised that anything like this is moving forward at all, though, of course, the numbers on emissions reduction are all aspirational.

Re: the size, it’s $370 billion for climate/environment, which actually IS something. I’ll be interested to see the specific allocation.

The very first thing we need is an energy policy that states our intention to phase out fossil fuels as rapidly as is feasible.  That doesn’t sound like a big deal to me.  It’s not like this country is timid about creating and adopting policies.  Why not this one?

The problem really is that GHG emissions in the US and the EU are holding steady (which isn’t good) but those in Asia are going through the roof, which is terrible. This is an international problem, and any “solution” that fails to address it accordingly is largely a waste of time and resources.

For some reason, political correctness is a controversial thing.  It strikes me a common courtesy, but maybe I’m missing something.

In any case, no one can accuse the fellow here of PC.  He’s willing to take the bull by the horns, and tell those women a thing or two.

Just when you thought you’d seen it all.

Alex Jones at the Insurrection

Do you have what it takes to be a high-profile defense attorney?  Take this simple test.

Imagine your client is being sued to the tune of $150 million because his behavior was off-the-charts inflammatory to dozens of people grieving the shooting deaths of their children.  During trial, do you a) conduct yourself with grace and dignity, and treat your opponent respectfully, or b) find an opportunity to publicly “flip him off?”

If you said a), you might have the right comportment for the job.

Obviously, however, this is not a cinch.  From this:

The attorney representing far-right conspiracy broadcaster Alex Jones in his defamation damages trial over falsely claiming the Sandy Hook massacre was a “hoax” apologized on Thursday for a heated courtroom spat and reportedly giving the middle finger to the plaintiff lawyer a day earlier.

A reader sent me the pic here and following:
Has anyone ever thought about this?
If all cars were electric…
And if we were stuck in a three hour traffic jam in the cold of a blizzard, the batteries would completely die.
Because electric cars basically don’t have heating.
And being stuck on the street all night, no battery, no heating, no wipers, no radio, no GPS, the battery is long dead.
You can try to call ambulance and protect women and children but they can’t come to help because all roads are closed and probably all police cars will be electric.
And when the roads are blocked by thousands of loaded cars, no one will be able to proceed. How to charge batteries on site?
The same problem during the summer vacation is the traffic jams for kilometers.
The possibility of turning on the air conditioning in an electric car would not be available only for a short period of time. Your batteries would die in an instant!
Of course, no politician or journalist talks about it, but this will happen.
The first point to be made here is that essentially none of this has any basis in fact, but that’s not what makes this worthy of a blog post.
What’s far more disturbing is that this came from someone with no training in anything even closely related to the subject matter who thought that, he, magically, or maybe due to his own brilliance, had discovered something that the world of business and science had somehow overlooked.  Who else would have had the nerve to ask of an industry that’s transforming our world, “Has anyone ever thought of this?”
It’s possible that our civilization is about to go down in flames.  But it won’t be because some fool just thought of something that the best scientific minds have somehow overlooked.

As you watch the very meaningful and touching video here, see if you don’t have the same realization I did: the importance of treating everyone like human beings.

We live in a day of great violence, one in which more than 100 Americans die of gun violence every day.

Who are these shooters?  I’m sure there has been a great deal of work scouring the data to try to answer that question, but I wonder if it isn’t simply this: they are folks who simply did not receive the treatment that is due to all people everywhere in every circumstance.

Marjorie Taylor Greene called upon the January 6th insurrectionists to break into the Capitol, and continues to defend their actions. “This is our 1776 moment!” she exclaimed.

It would stand to reason that any law-abiding citizen would support defeating her in the 2022 midterms. Yet, let’s think about this for a second.

I suggest that her behavior, a blend of treason, rank stupidity, and utter insanity, is probably doing Trumpism more harm than good.

I say let’s keep her around.

A few years ago we had the “March for Science,” and it occurred to me that most of the people who participated in it were pretty bright folks.  It would be interesting to know their average IQ; I would speculate something around 130.

Similarly, it would be fun to know the intelligence level of the people below.

A possible clue: One of the defendents facing prison for his role in the insurrection is invoking the so-called “idiot defense,” asserting that he is too stupid to know that what he was told about the stolen election couldn’t possibly be true, and that what he was doing was wrong.

As suggested here, the most significant beneficiaries of climate activism are either very young or have yet to be born.

Yes, wildfires and super-storms are driving people from homes, but the actual environmental damage due to rising temperatures will grow exponentially over time.
