What a terrible shame.  Betrayal is such a sad affair.

Just kidding.

What do you say to someone who is so stupid?

Not much good can be said about Coca Cola. Its main product is poison, sold in planet-destroying plastic containers that go 93% unrecycled, targeting neighborhoods with poor school districts, because well educated people tend to take better care of themselves.

Social media put an enormous amount of pressure on the international soft-drink pariah to suspend sales to Russia, finally leading to Coke’s folding its tent and agreeing to do so.

Yesterday, a (sarcastic) reader asked: If we all lived in mud huts for 103 years would it put the ice back?

Today, she went “back for seconds”: What’s wrong with mud huts? Humanity survived millions of years in them. Aren’t you willing to save this planet?

You’re ridiculing the people who are trying to avert the environmental collapse that our civilization’s geologists, chemists, biologists, and climate/atmospheric scientists assure us is in the process of occurring.

That speaks a great deal about you, none of it good.

His political opponents are making life very tough for Biden, but it’s quite clear that, by the time he leaves office, he will have accomplished a great deal on behalf of the common American.

Conservative intellectuals like George Will were a hard sell on Trump from the beginning.  They saw that this package of lies, racism, and buffoonery was a catastrophe in the making, causing some, like Will himself, to leave the Republican party altogether.

It appears that these folks are in the process of getting what they want: an extremely right-wing GOP, but one led by a relatively sane human being.

Let’s take a few moments to read what President Eisenhower told us about the growth of the U.S. military in peacetime when he left office in 1961.

He certainly nailed it.  War has become one of the largest industries in the world, and the United States accounts for almost half of it. Our society features homelessness, child hunger, underfunded school systems, disintegrating infrastructure, and imminent environmental collapse.

We can do better.

We all need to admit that there are extremely intelligent people at both ends of the political spectrum.  George Will, archconservative is about as far to the right as a person can be.  American linguist, philosopher, cognitive scientist, historian, and “father of modern linguistics” Noam Chomsky is very close to the opposite end.

But I’d like to know who, somewhere–anywhere–in the middle thinks that the swine shown here heckling the U.S. president’s State of the Union address belong on the floors of the U.S. Congress.

Now everything’s a little upside down
As a matter of fact the wheels have stopped
What’s good is bad, what’s bad is good
You’ll find out when you reach the top
You’re on the bottom

There was a day, not so long ago, that all Americans, progressives and conservatives alike, were anti-authoritarian.  We were all ideologically repelled by those who hate government of, by, and for the people.

Remember what G.W. Bush told us in the wake of 9/11? In explaining the terrorists’ actions, he said, “They hate our freedom.”

So what’s the story with Fox News and some other right-wing elements that are supporting Putin in Eastern Europe? When they say that we’re “canceling” Russia, what position do they recommend we take with an authoritarian leader who is invading a neighboring democracy?

The anti-Trump group MeidasTouch made this TV commercial on the January 6th insurrection and did an ad buy on Fox News.  At the last minute, Fox refused to air it.

And that somehow comes as a surprise?

I had a talk with a Republican the other day who told me that Biden, worse than buying oil from the Russians, destroyed America’s domestic oil production on his first day in office.  It took me a few moments to figure out what she meant…then it came to me: the Keystone XL pipeline. (more…)
