At left we have a lesson worth repeating, though, at this point, it would be shocking if there aren’t criminal charges brought against Trump associated with the failed coup.
To those concerned about the low profile that Merrick Garland is keeping, bear in mind that there were zero leaks before he unsealed the indictments against Timothy McVeigh, Terry Nichols, and the Unabomber. They were all convicted and there were no successful appeals.
It’s not the police who need to be retrained, it’s the public. We have grown into a mouthy, mobile phone wielding, vulgar, uncivil society with no personal responsibility and the attitude of ‘it’s the other person’s fault, you owe me’. A society where children grow up with no boundaries or knowledge or concern for civil society and personal responsibility.
To be sure, he has a point about disrespectful and noncompliant people, but IMO, to blame citizens’ behavior and to take no responsibility for things like the spate of deaths of unarmed black people is just atrocious. It’s completely obvious that the police need to be trained in de-escalating situations, using no more force than required, and not treating black people more harshly than whites. If you wear a badge and reject that, you really need to find another line of work.
What, precisely, did you expect him to say? Here’s something that would have gotten some rightful attention:
“Ya know, let’s not get ourselves into a snit about this. After all, “rule of law” is just a catch phrase. We have a long-standing tradition that rich and powerful people are above the law; in fact, we have a well-deserved international reputation for this exact notion, for which we should be very proud.”
Seriously, we’d all like to see this moving along faster, but we should have every confidence that the attempted coup will not be swept under the rug.
The time to upgrade your home security with solar power is now — because you shouldn’t have to sacrifice security needs for geographically challenged locations. Solar-powered security systems can bring peace of mind to your family, and you can use them in remote areas where cable lines are impossible to connect.
Here’s how solar power security works and the benefits it can bring to your home. (more…)
When we look at the morass our society finds itself in, we need to hope that our rejection of science and affection for conmen is simply a fad that will one day simply disappear.
After all, it is possible that we’ll get to a point and ask ourselves, “What on Earthwere we thinking?”
We didn’t put people on the moon and build computers by believing that the Deep State was trying to enslave our population. Maybe it’s simply time to move on.
What will ultimately be revealed about the insurrection and the planning that went into it remains at least partially a mystery, but the concept that it spontaneously generated from the energy in the crowd is the purest malarkey.
Some people speculate that the New York State Attorney General doesn’t need the cooperation of Don Jr. and Ivanka Trump, i.e., that there is already overwhelming evidence of fraud. It’s hard to know from here.
Insofar as this is a civil rather than criminal case, the Fifth Amendment doesn’t come into play. Should be interesting.
Here’s a glass-is-half-full kind of atheist whose attitude should be admired. Look at how close we are to complete agreement!
I’m reminded of a guided tour I once had at the J. Paul Getty collection of antiquities. I asked the guy, “Are you trying to tell me that the ancient Greeks who developed geometry, democracy, ethics, metaphysics, and so many disciplines within the arena of science believed that the sun was pulled across the sky by some fellow driving a chariot?”
He smiled, “Well, their society was surprisingly like ours. True, Socrates, Euclid and the others didn’t believe that stuff, but the people growing grapes 200 miles outside of Athens never thought to question it. Today, if you’re a molecular biologist or an astrophysicist, you’re extremely unlikely to believe that an omniscient being is looking down on you and guiding your life. But what about the people growing corn in Iowa?”
From where we sit at this point, it certainly does appear that Trump interfered with the election. It’s hard to know if the evidence as it currently exists would be sufficient to obtain a conviction, but keep in mind that the body of evidence is growing by the day; by next week at this time, things could look as black as the ace of spades for the former president.
Trump has been invincible all his life, and he likely thought there was no power on Earth that could keep him from getting his way. Looks like he was wrong here.
At that point, they’re free to take this little baby up and go wherever you please. It’s billed as a vehicle for commuting to and from the workplace, so you’ll be in restricted air spaces, but no matter; just try not to run into things. Why would the FAA care that you’re in the flightpath of planes landing at LAX or O’Hare? Try not to worry about weather conditions and the fact that you are completely clueless about aircraft, and just enjoy the freedom formerly available only to birds. (more…)
