About a year ago, I asked a wealthy friend for some advice on an investment, and he suggested that I buy stock in the private equity firm Colony Capital.  A few minutes on Google was sufficient to turn up that the company’s CEO was Tom Barrack, a very close friend of Donald Trump, and so I had to tell my friend that, on an ethical basis, I wouldn’t be getting involved.

As it turns out, and what a surprise it is, Barrack is on his way to prison.  It’s very clear that he illegally lobbied Trump on behalf of the United Arab Emirates.

He was released after his arrest, and trial is set for September, in the unlikely event that a plea agreement isn’t reached.

Funny, but at this point it seems that bringing income tax evasion charges against Trump is extremely unlikely, regardless of how egregious his actions were.

And that’s a good thing.  Trump needs to go down for something no decent American could possibly accept.  Even then, there will be people who believe that he was taken down by a corrupt Justice Department.  I don’t see any way around this, unfortunately.

Ouch.

He walked into that one, didn’t he?

If every reporter’s question were a set-up like this, I could do the job myself.

Yes, it’s true, at least according to this.

Apparently there is a war being fought to determine which “news” outlet is the purveyor of the meanest and most stupid garbage.

That’s funny, in a way.

If we get through this mess with Trump, as it appears we will, we’ll all have to thank Liz Cheney.

Without her bravery and initiative, it’s possible that The United States would have lost its democracy.

From the popular minister John Pavlovitz:
Four years ago I received a letter from a 90-year old woman who was born in the Netherlands, lived under Hitler, and whose father was tortured and died in Dachau.
She told me that in the Republican Party, she saw history repeating here and asked me to keep fighting.
I do.
Keep fighting, good people.
Fight tyranny and hatred today.
It’s never a good idea to let one’s guard down, but given the revelations of the last few weeks, it appears the Republican Party, at least the wanna-be fascists, is in the process of being completely dismantled.

I have many faults, though I have very little hate, envy, and pride of possession.

I even love what’s happening in Washington.  As my wife and I were just discussing, I view the failed coup as a fantastic opportunity–perhaps the best single thing that’s every happened to the United States.

Of course, we’re not out of the woods, but at this point, it appears that the former president whose name cannot be spoken (nor written) got caught red-handed trying to subvert American democracy.

We’re about to prove to our nation and the world once more, 47 years after Watergate, that no one is above the law, and that people who try to overthrow our government pay a handsome price for it.

I don’t support this.

When it’s proven that Trump engaged in an insurrection, his a** will be in a great deal more trouble than simply being banned from public office.

The truth is actually worse than Biden presented.  This has nothing to do with his bruised ego and his inability to face the loss.

The man’s not an idiot.  He knows goddamn well that he lost.  He didn’t ask Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger for a recount; he told him to “find me 11,780 votes.”

The truth is that, knowing this, he tried to overturn the results of a free and fair election.  This wasn’t a psychologically-driven action; it was a cold and calculated act of treason.

Of course, the way Biden played this was prudent; making this accusation would have been a terrible mistake.  When the facts are on the table, the justice system will move accordingly.

There is no doubt that the American electorate needs to come to terms with what happened following the 2020 election and culminating on January 6, 2021. Our democracy cannot go forward with almost half of voters believing the Big Lie.

Prime-time televised hearings seem to be a good tool to get this started.

As dug in as many Trump supporters are, watching irrefutable evidence unfold in real time, and seeing indictments unsealed may have some effect.  We can only hope.
