It seems fairly clear that there is practically zero election fraud in this country, and that the only way Republicans can win elections is by putting pressure on voters so as to reduce their numbers.

I would have been more impressed if the GOP were able to offer real value to voters.  That worked for them in the past.  Law and order.  Personal accountability.  A strong military.

How hard would it be to pretend Trump and the Big Lie never happened and go back there?

A reader notes: What confuses me is why right wing media so hates electric vehicles.
EVs are a part of the environmental movement.  As we electrify our transportation and energy sectors, and replace fossil fuels with low-carbon sources of energy, we have the potential to stem environmental collapse, especially that which comes in the form of climate change and ocean acidification.
That may not sound controversial, but alas, it is, and in a big way.
As in all arenas of human endeavor, the right wing manages to create a battle against progress.  Here, their argument takes many forms:
 • Phasing out fossil fuels will damage the economy.
 • Only the continued use of fossil fuels will enable the U.S. to maintain its energy independence.
 • Climate science is flawed.
 • Climate scientists are corrupt.
 • The capacity of the planet to support life is not in danger.
 • Only God can damage the Earth and its occupants.
Every single one of these propositions is demonstrably false, but with enough powerful people telling these lies it’s been a terrible challenge to move forward.
I wish I had better news for you.

Young people may not know that there was a time not too long ago when terrorist violence, especially when committed against Americans, was uniformly considered to be a bad thing.

Of course, along came social media, the great dumbing down of our nation, Donald Trump, the hateful morons who support him, and, of course, the Big Lie.

Next thing you know, we have the President of the United States calling on his supporters to go down to the Capitol and fight like hell to prevent the 2020 election from being certified.

What Adam Schiff says here had been the case until just a few days ago.  At that point, it became clear that the justice department, as assisted by the congressional investigation into January 6th, is in the process of turning this around and dismantling Trump.

We need to be patient, confident that rule of law will not be removed as the core principle guiding the United States.

They say that Trump can’t handle being humiliated. His former attorney, Michael Cohen, says that Trump won’t run in 2024 because he couldn’t stand the humiliation of another loss.

Given this, I have bad news for the ex-president: he’s not going to like video footage of him in handcuffs spread all around the globe.

A reader notes: I think you are wrong when you suggest that no one with adequate credentials in science disputes the current Covid policies.

Well, I have no access to the discussions that happen at the top of the “food chain” at the CDC, and the many other bodies that create public health policy all around the world. It wouldn’t surprise me if there were disagreements. (more…)

From this:

A Missouri woman charged with the infamous theft of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s name plate during the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol Complex is facing an altogether more serious legal issue in her home state as of this week. According to the Missouri Highway Patrol, Emily Hernandez, 22, was driving drunk on the wrong side of the highway during a fatal crash that killed another motorist on Wednesday evening in Franklin County.

At the risk of stating the obvious:

1) Insurrectionists aren’t people of fine character, and

2) If she had been in prison where she belongs, this couldn’t have happened.

Trump has succeeded in many ways, chiefly drawing the admiration of tens of millions of Americans who, anyone would have sworn, would have hated his pathologically lying guts.

It’s amazing.

Apparently, some of Trump’s former staff members want to tell the truth about how terrible a person their former employer was.  They propose to tour the country and “talk to people.”

From the article linked above:

A group of former Trump administration officials are banding together in an effort to block their former boss from entering office again.

The meeting of the group, announced by former White House press secretary and chief of staff to the first lady Stephanie Grisham (pictured), is scheduled for next week where they will discuss how to “try and stop” former President Donald Trump and the “kind of violence and rhetoric that has been talked about and continues to divide our country.” In an interview with CNN on the morning of Jan. 6, Grisham said about 15 former Trump administration officials — some she said, who ranked higher than her — have held informal discussions and plan to meet in person.

“I think that there were a few of us who, again, have been sitting back watching him continue to manipulate and spread this big lie and continue to harm our country,” Grisham told CNN. “And [we] started some informal chats and then started throwing around ideas of what we could do, how we could formalize it.”

While I can’t say that this is a bad thing, I see very little utility in it.  What we need, and are in the process of gathering, is hard evidence that Trump committed one or more felonies.
Right now, this seems to be lining up behind his attempted coup.  Unless you can help us here, I’m not sure how much good will be done by using up your airlines miles.

You go, girl.  Take us back 75 years (at least).

Kidding aside, this is, unfortunately, the type of thing one sees in Texas.

The other day, I came across something similar from a candidate in New Hampshire, and I wrote to her, “New Hampshire???  Are you serious???  Your state ranks #6 in the nation in education.  Half the state commutes to Boston.  These voters aren’t ignorant pigs. If you want to succeed with hateful bull**** like this, you’ll need to take it to Alabama or Mississippi.  They can’t get enough of this.”
