South Florida Cubans, who are amongst the biggest enrollees and beneficiaries of the Affordable Care Act per capita, anywhere in all the United States, voted en masse for the man whose stated goal is to destroy and eliminate the ACA.
All they hear from Trump and associates is that Biden will bring socialism to the US. Many either fled Cuba under Castro’s rule or are descendants of those who fled. The GOP feeds their fears rather than being honest.
The conversation among progressives as I post this, in the middle of the day after the U.S. presidential election, where a Biden victory looks probable but uncertain, goes roughly like this: Looks like Biden squeaked by, but what we’ve learned about 60+ million Americans is even more sickening than it was in 2016. Here, Trump supporters lived through four full years of racial division, caged children, selling out our troops, pandemic mismanagement, job loss and factory closures, environmental destruction, failing education, enrichment of billionaires, lies, obstruction, and fraud–and, at the end of all that, said, “We demand four more years of this!” (more…)
A reader notes: This is my father, Frederick H. Hahn, 3rd. In 1940 at age 38, he enlisted to fight the Nazis. He fought in North Africa and Italy where he was wounded when his jeep flipped over after hitting a mine. He would, without a doubt, be turning over in his grave as American Nazis–who share the same characteristics of virulent racism and disdain for intellect–are getting so close to a complete coup d’état to ensure an iron grip on America.(more…)
Part of the reason so many Americans are stressed out about the election results is the feeling of a lack of agency. We each have only one vote, and, when we look at the photo here and are reminded of the level of intelligence of our fellows, we feel a terrible gnawing, deep in our guts.
Generally, Trump doesn’t evoke laughter. Yes, he’s a buffoon, but the damage he does on an hour-to-hour basis is so extreme that it’s just not appropriate to chuckle in response.
Having said that, with the U.S. presidential election too close to call at the moment of publishing this post, I thought I’d offer a few words on Trump from comedian Jim Jeffries.
Many Americans are stressed out beyond words on this election day, the results of which have so much impact. Both sides are convinced that a loss means the ruination of the country, and a great deal of suffering for them personally.
Normally, Super Bowl Sunday marks the annual record in the consumption of alcohol here in the U.S., but that’s certainly not going to be the case in 2020. It’s hard to blame people for thinking that a couple of swigs just may make this whole thing easier to face.
Talk radio features numerous suggestions to deal with the mental anguish that derives from days like today: stay busy, treat yourself to something you like, commiserate with friends, stay positive, etc.
Speaking of positivity, please check out the meme here.
“We have probed the earth, excavated it, burned it, ripped things from it, buried things in it, chopped down its forests, leveled its hills, muddied its waters, and dirtied its air. That does not fit my definition of a good tenant. If we were here on a month-to-month basis, we would have been evicted long ago.”
