Did you know that there really are Americans who love the violence and racial hatred that have come to define current times in Trump’s presidency?  When Trump says that venues at which police tear-gassed protesters were “beautiful scenes,” you have to understand that a significant percentage of the U.S. population sees no cruelty, no irony to that whatsoever.

I came across this cartoon just now.

If November 3, 2020 (U.S. election day) goes the wrong way, it will be a moment that this becomes our reality.

As often mentioned here, I heartily recommend the long-running weekly podcast “The Energy Gang” to anyone wishing to keep up with the technological, economic, and political trends in the international energy industry. (more…)

From former U.S. Labor Secretary Robert Reich:

Trump’s first official campaign rally will be in Tulsa, Oklahoma on June 19, the day known as Juneteenth, which marks the end of slavery in the U.S. Tulsa is the site of a race massacre 99 years ago that remains one of the worst acts of racial violence in US history. In 1921, hundreds of African Americans were killed when white mobs looted and burned what had been a thriving neighborhood known as “Black Wall Street.” (more…)

Sure, today’s news cycle is dominated by the pandemic and systemic racism.

Underneath that, however, the world hasn’t stopped grinding forward.  The macrotrends that underlie each of our industries haven’t ceased to affect us.

As discussed in the Newsweek article, perhaps the biggest thing in the energy sector is relegation of coal to the dustbin (pun intended) of history.

Now, if we can “get it gone” from Asia as well, we’ll see a quantum improvement in the health of both our planet and our lungs.

Brother, I feel your pain.

I try to write posts about whatever comes up in the news cycle, e.g., the concept that biodiversity and climate stability play a role in preventing another pandemic.

Having said that, the acute situations really are making it hard to focus the world’s attention on this long-term challenge.

Over the past 48 hours, Tucker Carlson’s Fox News show lost four major advertisers: T-Mobile, SmileDirectClub, Disney and Papa John’s.

Are these companies honestly on the right side of the issue, or do they simply not want to be associated with ugly politics of racial hatred?  Bear in mind that the crescendo in Fox hate-casting is occurring at the precise moment at which the vast majority of the country is trying to get past this.

Frankly, I don’t know, but it’s good to see this in any case.

This may sound like a peculiar thing to say, and I’m essentially kidding, but all this police homicide gives us an opportunity to brush up on the differences between various types of murder and manslaughter. (more…)
