This meme reminds us of the capacity for kindness and human compassion that lives deep within all us.  From Wikipedia:

I love the guy wrote that “this is shocking.” Really? Yes, it’s domestic terrorism, and as such , it’s a criminal felony, but “shocking?” Fron what part of history do you hail from?

One of every five children separated is under five

I just had a sad realization, but one I wanted to share nonetheless.

I got a Christmas card from an old college buddy who wrote, among the usual seasonal messaging, “Everyone here had a very good year.”  I turned immediately to my wife, and said, “OMG, he’s a Trump supporter.  Those are the only Americans who could possibly say they had very good years.  Everyone else feels at least some level of sorrow for those who are suffering, and will continue to do so many years after Trump’s gone, as a result of his cruel policies, too numerous to name. And it doesn’t stop with sorrow; we feel a deep anger towards the perpetrator and his enablers.

If you had a “very good year” when 5400 children are locked up, separated from their parents, and the environment is being torn apart, I don’t know what to tell you.

It’s a shame when an organization that does so much good in the world says something so totally unfair.  Greenpeace says Bloomberg’s environmental plans “have holes in them,” but report that he’s coming out soon with revisions to address those holes.  So they give him a D+? (more…)

A reader explains his viewpoint on climate change:

My view is fairly simple.  While carbon emissions are something that we need to have common sense about, and pollution of the Ocean is definitely a serious concern, I do not believe that the UN backed climate studies are in any way reflective of the sum total of information on the subject of climate change.  (more…)

I thought this was good, and I hope readers enjoy it.

The folklore of English-speaking people has no equivalent of Knecht Ruprecht (see right), a crude hooligan known to German children, who shows up at Christmastime and scolds them for their misbehavior. (more…)

Turning this around will require the complete cooperation of every major government on the planet, as supported by the vast majority of Earth’s people.  Think for a moment about the scope of that task.

Perhaps the true gift of Christmas is the opportunity to care about our world and love humankind with such intensity that all this becomes possible.

In response to the meme at left, a reader comments, “It shouldn’t be the government regulating what we buy.”

That depends on your philosophy of government.  IMO, government should act to protect the health and safety of its citizens.  Consuming less electricity means a healthier environment for all of us.  I’m OK with a government that mandates seatbelts in cars, prohibits drunk driving, requires licenses for contractors, keeps poisons out of the food supply, etc.
