Global Transition Renewable Energy Has Three Phases

Costa-Rica-travel-caribbean-734105 (1)It’s useful to look at the planetary transition from fossil fuels to renewables in three phases:

• Renewables come to dominate the grid-mix

• Electric transportation powered by renewables replaces gasoline and diesel for cars and light trucks

• The hard stuff: aircraft, large trucks, etc.

Here’s a Ted Talk describing where Costa Rica is currently, i.e., right at the end of the first and the beginning of the second.  Since they disbanded their military in 1948, they’ve invested heavily in environmental protection, and it’s paid off huge for them, busting the myth that societies must choose between environmental stewardship and a robust economy.  Great going.

    Craig,

What is it with you and Costa Rica ? Is life so hard hard in Santa Barbara you must believe in a magical never-never land ?

In comparison to Costa Rica’s Central American neighbours, Costa Rica is doing very well indeed and a far more pleasant place to live, especially if you live in one of the 49.7% of household connected to electricity, live by a surfaced road and enjoy water and sewerage connections.

Otherwise, life is,…well a bit basic for much of the population ! Kerosene or wood being the main fuels.

Costa Rica is a very small nation of 5 million, and a land area 19,714 square miles.(smaller than W. Virgina).

Costa Rica has no heavy industrial power demand, but is blessed with a huge amount of Hydro-power.

While Costa Rica is, in many ways, an admirable little country, I think you would discover swapping Santa Barbara for San Jose, might be a disappointment.
