UK: No Coal for Two Weeks Straight, Longest Period Since 1880s

largeHip outfit! Good things are happening all over the world, firmly rooted in humankind’s commitment to survival.  Though Britain has a long way to go before it will have eliminated coal from its grid-mix entirely (target: 2025), they have made enormous strides in that direction.  Kudos.

Obviously, none of this matters if our civilization is unable to get a grasp on coal consumption in places like India, China, Australia, and Indonesia, not to mention the U.S.

    Craig,

Once again, the best part of your article is the photo! 🙂

The BBC report contained a number of errors and omissions. The figures quoted were for power produced, not consumed.

When readjusted for consumption, solar and wind drop to just under 6.7%.

Britain is heavily committed to using Natural gas, which is not good news for the environment since NG plants actually emit more CO2 and other climate gases than the newest Coal fired technology.

What is also true, is the UK has recently re-opended two high grade coal mines.

Meanwhile the price of NG in Europe is increasing due to rising demand.

It’s green fanatics like yourself who are doing the greatest damage to the environment.

The result of your ignorant “War on Coal” has seen the destruction of ancient Russian and east European forest to produce “bio-mass” and stifling investment to build new “clean(er)” coal technology.

Not only has this result in most nations retaining old obsolete “dirty’ coal fired power plant’s, but denied other industries the coal by-products necessary to assist in reducing emissions.
