Germany's EnergiewendePredictably, my post congratulating Germany for its recent record-setting day on which it powered its grid with 85% renewable energy was met with the usual naysayer, who, this time, took umbrage that I had quoted an article that didn’t overhype the struggles associated with Germany’s Energiewende (energy transition).  He writes:  “Said Tweedledum to Tweedledee, “With these rose-tinted glasses, look how happy we can be.” (more…)

Rooftop Wind TurbinesThere is a lot of talk about green living nowadays, about energy efficient, sustainable homes, about reducing the consumption of energy by using and reusing natural resources and materials. This is all with the purpose of reducing pollution, waste, and carbon gas emissions because our climate is rapidly changing, and not for the better. We are faced with the ever growing water and air pollution as well as global warming. (more…)

Renaming Places and Things Is Sometimes Cause for SadnessIn general, renaming places and things on this planet shouldn’t be particularly disturbing to anyone: progress militates that Mt. McKinley, Bombay, Burma, Ceylon, Dahomey, Rhodesia, etc. all lose their names to support our more modern sensibilities.  But certain places require new names because of unfortunate and probably irreversible environmental events, and that really should cause considerable discomfort to everyone on the planet.   (more…)

Great Video on Ocean CurrentsHere’s a short but wonderful video created from images from NASA’s Goddard Space Center called “The Way the Oceans Move.” As you’re watching it, ask yourself: Shouldn’t this be called “The Way The Oceans USED To Move?”  Rising ocean temperatures, changing densities/salinity, and melting ice are changing all this stuff right before our very eyes.

Germany Sets Solar PV RecordRight now it’s tough to get excited about anything else than the single most bizarre thing that’s ever happened in U.S. history, i.e., the firing of the FBI Director, the totally incredible reason provided for it, and what appears to be the beginning of the end of the Trump administration. But here goes: Germany set a new record for the use of renewable energy, mostly solar energy.  On April 30 of this year, 85% of all the electricity consumed in Germany was being produced from renewables such as wind, solar, biomass, and hydroelectric power. Is Civilization Going Down for the Count?Regarding one of my more cynical posts,  a commenter writes: Craig, things seem to cycle in and cycle out thru societies over history.  It looks like we are seeing a recycling of Oliver Cromwell and his idiot round-heads are in power in the US.  Nothingness is out of fashion, but the tides will turn! Keep on the right path don’t be distracted; the morons and minions will run out of hot air and their current overreach in time. (more…)
