I get a real charge out of obviously disingenuous remarks. Yesterday we had Donald Trump’s thanking Vladimir Putin for expelling 755 members of the U.S. state department from Russia, on the basis that this will reduce the U.S. federal government’s payroll. Apparently, Trump is depending on his supporters’ ignorance (fancy that), i.e., that they can’t figure out that these emissaries have not been fired, and that they’re still receiving paychecks. He’s also talking to people who don’t understand that these people added a great deal of value to our national security. (more…)

A commenter asked for my viewpoints on the coal industry, while claiming, incorrectly, that it’s supported by everyone except environmentalists who are “extremist and idealist.” Here goes:
The first thing to understand about the coal industry is that it’s small and going away. As we sit here today, there are 34 times more people working in McDonald’s alone than there are in U.S. coal mines. Even its leaders caution those families who may be dependent on coal that Trump’s rhetoric on bringing back jobs in this space is completely empty. (more…)

I try not to miss the annual Energy Storage North America conference in San Diego each year…and that’s where I’ll be late this afternoon and all day tomorrow. To anyone in the area: please feel free to join me.
The trip also gives me the opportunity to meet with one of my favorite clients, Terrapro Solutions, whose domain is outsourcing the vast amount of administrative work associated with the development of large wind and solar energy projects, both in the U.S. and internationally.
We can learn a great deal from the European Investment Bank’s recent decision to pump $5 billion to renewables in the Eastern Hemisphere. Principally, greening up the energy landscape in Europe and Asia is a bit more complicated than dumping cash into solar and wind. (more…)
