Bill Gates’ Involvement in Clean Energy and the Mitigation of Climate DisruptionIn his reference to my post on the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, a reader notes:  At the end of this century people will look back on what the Gates Foundation spent millions or even billions of dollars on and declare it was a huge waste of money and should have been spent to control greenhouse emissions.

Bill Gates has not been entirely absent from the clean energy space, but it’s clearly “not his thing.”  I’m not sure why this is, given his powerful intellect and his facility with math/science.  (more…)

Scientists Apocalypse Would be funny if it weren’t tragic.

First story here.

Second one here.

Nothing more to say this afternoon.

Biofuels Breakthrough?I just came across a start-up that proposes to convert some of the chemical energy in landfill waste (MSW – municipal solid waste) into glucose, and then sell it to ethanol producers.  I had promised myself that I wasn’t going to get involved with a discussion with these people, but eventually I broke down and wrote: (more…)

Sustainability and Political PhilosophyEvery couple of weeks there is something in The Writer’s Almanac that seems particularly relevant to the issues we discuss here at 2GreenEnergy. Perhaps it’s the anniversary of a scientific discovery that changed the way we understand energy, or the first publication of a book that shaped our viewpoints on justice, or the birthday of a leader who transformed our civilization.

Here’s a quick story that Garrison Keillor, the publication’s creator, told in passing a few decades ago on his radio show.   He seldom mentions himself or his private thoughts, and this was a rare exception.  He said (and I paraphrase):   (more…)

Eco-Friendly Construction--How This Big Trend Is Making Big Waves in the Construction IndustryThe “green” building movement has caused dramatic changes in the construction industry over the past few years. As consumers became more aware of the impact of traditional construction activities on the environment and the use of resources such as wood, water and energy, they have sparked a revolution in the industry. This trend is quickly gaining traction and making waves, and could be a huge indication of the future of the construction industry. (more…)

Mitt Romney on Climate ChangeI don’t admire Mitt Romney as a person, and I certainly don’t envy the political position in which he finds himself. At the very best, he faces the same dilemma he did four years ago: figuring how to appear far enough to the right to get the GOP nomination, but sufficiently moderate so as not to look like a nut-job to the general electorate only a few months later.  That’s an unwinnable war on a good day.

I bring this up because of this article where Romney says that, despite his status as a Republican, he believes in climate change, which made me laugh out loud when I read it this afternoon. (more…)

stock brokerI admire people who write directly and concisely, like this columnist for Yahoo Finance whom I quote below.

I post this not only to applaud the fellow’s lucid prose, but also to make a point of relevance to the numerous cleantech investors who happen to check out 2GreenEnergy from time to time.  It deals with micro-cap stocks whose executive teams manufacture encouraging (though clearly false) news about their projected success and the fact that their stock price can’t fail to rise.  (more…)

Here’s good reading for those who don’t mind laughing and crying at the same time: the U.S. Senate’s discussion and voting on the acceptance of the theory of climate change.

I’m reminded of the report I wrote a few years ago, based on a survey of 200 people, the conclusion of which is this: people recognize that there are pressing environmental issues, climate disruption among them, but believe strongly that the U.S. government will never take the appropriate action to address this.  Thus the title of the press release: “We’re Screwed.”

Top Renewable Energy Author “Bullish” on the Future -- Craig Shields' Fourth Book Takes Unexpected TurnI’m sure there are people who enjoy writing press releases; I just happen not to be one of them, especially since they require such an appalling lack of modesty. Yet I force myself to crank one out every time I publish a new book; a colleague told me long ago this was a good idea, and I’ve taken his advice ever since.

Here’s what I wrote for “Bullish on Renewable Energy.”

Improving Conditions for the Poorest of the PoorHere’s one of those “What’s wrong with this picture” quizzes.

Bill and Melinda Gates, co-chairs of their Foundation, the most powerful philanthropic force on Earth, gave an hour-long interview on Charlie Rose (PBS) that aired last night.  Here are my notes, followed by a comment:  (more…)
