Patriotism
A reader sent me this and notes, “My kind of patriotism.”
Thanks, but I’m more impressed with those who stand up against attempts to overthrow the U.S. government and obliterating rule of law.
Manslaughter Charges for Trump?
I can completely see this. He watched people whom he knew to be armed storming the Capitol Building, which was packed with police, congresspeople, and the Vice President. And he did nothing for more than three hours while people were dying.
But from where I sit (and everyone else outside the DoJ), I still think the strongest cases are seditious conspiracy and treason. Based on the evidence we already have, there’s no way on Earth Trump didn’t try to overthrow the U.S. government.
Scientists and Republicans
Good point being made here.
It could be said that scientists and Republicans are the opposites of one another; in fact, most of the people in the U.S. who reject scientific evidence on things like climate change, vote counting, and pandemic control are, in fact, Republicans.
In the case of space exploration, the object of the game is knowledge of the universe around us, not hogging huge sums of money for the super-rich.
We senior citizens remember that this most certainly wasn’t the case when we were young. The GOP has gone from being conservative on issues like the size and role of government, to being the epitome of greed and selfishness, not to mention bat**** insanity.
It pains me deeply to see an entire country flushing itself down the toilet like this.
Trump’s Done: So We Would All Like To Believe
At this point, it appears that Trump is approaching the end of his ability to pass off lies, and has, indeed, painted himself into a corner.
An old friend pointed out that Trump has never lost, implying that his winning streak will remain intact indefinitely.
My response: That can be said about all those who are undefeated, until their first loss.
This is shaping up to be a loss of epic proportions.

Is anyone surprised that Trump tampered with a J6 witness?
He’s going down hard on far more serious charges, and he’s desperate. What can we expect?
It’s amazing that he’s still in the United States. It could be just a matter of days until he’s arrested and loses any opportunity to flee the country.

Did the Supreme Court Justices Lie Under Oath?
I’d love to say otherwise, but I don’t think this is going to work. These are profoundly unethical people, but proving that they committed perjury isn’t possible.
Imagine that you wanted to overturn Roe, and someone asked you your beliefs on the subject. You replied, “Roe v. Wade is settled law.” What you were thinking is that “Roe v. Wade is settled law, which I intend to overturn if I get the chance.”
What you actually said was not a lie.
Trump’s Back Is Against the Wall
In his dreams, Trump believes that the meme here is part of American reality. And there is not doubt that his MAGA brand holds, and will continue to hold, a strong appeal to tens of millions of his supporters, regardless of how hard the justice system comes down on him and his crime spree.
The problem: there are too many people who have seen through the lies, and believe in rule of law.
One of my favorite French expressions applies: Les carottes sont cuites, or, in English, “the carrots are cooked,” i.e., this is a disaster, and it’s too late to turn it around.

The American South Has Long Been Deprived
Here’s a graphic that calls to mind the poverty of the southern states.
No electricity means reading by candlelight, no refrigeration, and less productivity/affluence.
One hundred years later, the South is still packed with racism and dozens of other forms of ignorance. Worse, its people want no help from outsiders.
Who Doesn’t Miss Mad Magazine?
Mad Magazine wasn’t typically political, but it was always smart.
Mad had a long and distinguished run (1952 – 2018), one that made a deep impression on almost all Americans.
