From Bernie Sanders: The Walton family is worth $238 billion. Yet they pay wages so low, 14,541 of their workers in 9 states are forced to rely on food stamps to feed their families. I say to the Walton family: Get off welfare. Pay your workers a living wage—at least $15 an hour.
It truly is outrageous that you and I are paying for the Medicaid services and food stamps that go to minimum wage workers who would die/starve without them, when these people are working for people worth a quarter trillion dollars. (more…)
He’s going, but not without doing as much damage as possible.
From National Public Radio: Starting Tuesday, oil and gas companies can pick which parts of Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge they’re interested in drilling. It’s the latest push by the Trump administration to auction off development rights in the pristine landscape before President-elect Joe Biden takes office.(more…)
The “surfer girl” here was bitten by a shark, a shark that, for reasons we’ll never know, changed its mind almost instantaneously, and simply swam away. That’s good luck.
And speaking of good luck, it appears that the United States has once again rejected attempts by a U.S. president to overturn rule of law for his own betterment. Trump still has the backing of over 70 million voters, but he’ll be leaving office on or before January 20th, 2021.
One of the joys of having Trump gone is that Americans will no longer have to hang their heads in shame when we encounter people in other countries. Our neighbor to the north has felt our pain since the very beginning, and it sure will be nice to have their renewed respect and admiration.
As shown here, Canada has a markedly different culture than the United States, one aspect of which is that they don’t take themselves too seriously.
Even after all the years since the 9/11 attacks, it’s still hard to believe that Rudy Giuliani, a man we once afforded so much admiration, has turned into an absolute buffoon. And let’s not forget that he’s a criminal as well, if only based on his actions in the Ukrainian extortion case. (more…)
In response to the meme here, I would say that it depends on one’s definition of “market.” If we mean the market of today, in which corporations are free to use our atmosphere as their own private sewers, and convert our rainforests into pastureland for the 2.94 million cows that they slaughter each year, then yes, we need to rethink our system (whatever that means). a) It’s asinine. Philadelphia is at 40 degrees north latitude, so on average, you’re losing ~24% simply by installing solar on a flat roof, i.e., without orienting it towards the sun. Putting PV on the walls is even worse. The solar PV industry is under enough pressure that it doesn’t need to make matters even worse.
b) The numbers it quotes make this look even more ridiculous. It’s 176 lousy kilowatts, about 10 times the size of a typical American rooftop array?
While it’s true that there have been projects like this that were built merely for show, they send the message: “We don’t know what we’re talking about.”
Here’s a young man with a wonderful life ahead of him. At his tender age, he seems to have grasped something that a great number of older Americans will go to their graves not understanding.
Our nation is consumed by racial hatred, brutality and cruelty, and the indifference to the suffering of others. These are not the traits of any great nation.
One can only hope that the incoming administration can act as a catalyst in healing our tortured society.
German-born playwright Bertold Brecht escaped Nazi Germany in 1933; after brief stints in Prague and Paris, he ultimately landed in Copenhagen. At left is the warning he gave the rest of the world when Hitler fell in 1945.
The reason that this admonition is so relevant in today’s world is obvious: At the surface, what has come to be called “Trumpism” will soon be repudiated. At that point, the United States will experience some level of sanity and decency from its new president, for the first time in four years, and this has the nation hoping for the best: the application of science in handling the pandemic, the return of rule of law, a cabinet that is put in place to serve the American people (rather than to punish them), a revival of environmental responsibility, and a refocus on quality public education. Reader A: You go, girl…somewhere else. QAnon is probably hiring…..
Reader B: Boy, that’s a pretty huge pile of BS! This woman has proven herself incredibly competent on the highest stage in the land against some of the most vindictive scumbags ever issued White House Press Passes! I think you know that too. Your hate and jealousy are showing. She’ll certainly have a productive life ahead of her!(more…)
