I met the people from Eos at an energy storage event in San Diego many moons ago, perhaps 2010.  One of their reps told me that they were right around the corner from a commercially available zinc-air battery that would be on the market at $160/kWh, which impressed the heck out of me. (more…)

If there is anything to like about the state of American politics as we sit here today, less than three months before the 2020 elections, it’s the simplicity of the whole thing.  The proud home-owner whose lawn sports this sign has laid out a beautifully clear statement as to why he supports the re-election of the 45th President of the United States.

This, btw, is why Trump’s approval rating cannot fall beneath a certain level.  There are many tens of millions of American voters who think the four words on this sign explain everything a voter needs to know in order to cast an informed ballot.

Fortunately, at this point, those people are trailing by a significant margin in the polls, but anything can happen between now and November 3rd–and probably will.

Let’s add onto that:

How to live with a government being taken over by a criminal sociopath, and a society so fixated on gratifying its own selfish desires that it’s become the only one on Earth to have allowed a pandemic to spin out of control.

As shown at left and in the comments below, there are entire communities of people who believe the pandemic is a hoax.  I thought readers may be amused, horrified, or some combination of the two by the discussion here.

Person A: Absolutely true..the facts would speak for themselves

Person B: Haha that’s so TRUE!! 😂😫

Person C: Yes so true. It is real on the TV and to those who watch it and go into agreement. One can only imagine the intelligence that the Worlds (sic) politician’s (sic) are receiving.

Person D: There are many studies being written and paid for right now to prove this is wrong.

Craig Shields The only problem here is that it’s completely false. Between my wife and me, we know five people who have died of COVID-19 thus far.

Person E: I’m sorry, this is not only a rude and ridiculous post but invalidates those of us whos (sic) family members, neighbors and clients contracted it. Certain aspects of the total scenario may be mis-represented or even false, but the actual symptoms from Covid19 overshadow anything experienced by “the flu” and for the people and families who get hit hard, the death is awful. Simple flu doesn’t shut down your lungs and doesn’t put you on a ventilator. You live in lala land if you believe what you posted.

Person F: While I don’t (sic) agree with shutting down the world for a disease that 98% survive, I will say it is real. Cremating my mom who died of covid, yesterday.

Person G: It’s a stupid and insulting meme, unsurprisingly especially to those who’ve lost loved ones, who have not just a right but an obligation to speak the truth to the issue.

Craig Shields: My issue with this isn’t that it’s asinine (which it is), but rather that it’s a criminally harmful thing to do. Trying to convince others that the entirety of the scientific community is lying and that there is no need to protect themselves and others in the middle of a pandemic is a profoundly deeply destructive act.

A few questions about Trump’s rant at Ohio’s campaign rally:

• Biden is going to hurt an omnipotent being? The writings of an omnipotent being?

• Republicans have been saying that Democrats are somehow going to (somehow) nullify the Second Amendment and “take away your guns” for as long as I can remember.  Are there still people stupid enough to believe this, after all these decades?  (more…)

Gary Tulie writes: Since we all breath the same air and stand to suffer one way or another from climate change, I hope we can all set aside political rivalries to continue and expand cooperation on the further refinement of these technologies.

Right.  On the one hand we must do this.  On the other, a) there is not precedent of anything even remotely like this in human history, and b) authoritarian leaders like Putin, Erdogan, Kim, Xi, Duterte, and Maduro, as well as elected but wannabe dictators like Netanyahu, Trump and Bolsonaro control their populations in part with messages of nationalism.

I happen to know a self-proclaimed constitutional scholar who tried to explain to me that the words “well regulated” found in the Second Amendment had a fundamentally different meaning in 18th Century America than it has today.  I can’t remember precisely what he said, and frankly, I didn’t believe him, as he is simultaneously a gun nut, and loves to invent justifications for his position.

In any case, let me offer the photo here, and pose this question: Is there any conceivable sense, at any point in the evolution of the English language, that these slobs could be construed to be a “well regulated militia?”

Gary Tulie writes from his home in Buckinghamshire, England (see below): Hi Craig, BP along with fellow European oil companies Shell and Total are now committed to net zero by 2050. Let’s hope that technological advances, learning curve, and political will combine to achieve this target a few years earlier!

John Wesley was an 18th Century English cleric, theologian and evangelist.  Wikipedia notes:  (He) was a leader of a revival movement within the Church of England known as Methodism. The societies he founded became the dominant form of the independent Methodist movement that continues to this day.

As shown here, Wesley had some fabulous values.  Sure would be great to integrate them into American society, but it appears we’re quite a ways from that.

I’m always impressed when people who lived long ago expressed concerns about the environment, since there was such little visible pollution at the time.  This must have necessitated keen insight.
