My wife and I may be leaving the country if Trump is re-elected, as the little missus isn’t tolerating the blossoming authoritarianism here very well.

Insofar as we have friends in New Zealand, that seemed like a reasonable choice for a new place to call home, but the realtor I contacted didn’t seem as sanguine on the idea.  He was polite, but it was clear that he didn’t see how an American could possibly be unaware of the fact that he wasn’t welcome in New Zealand (nor in 99% of the rest of the world) under any circumstances.

Those living outside the U.S. are in the enviable position of not being forced to follow the breaking news in this complete wreck of a country.

Therefore, you may not be aware of conservative commentator and aspiring politician DeAnna Lorraine, nor of what she said in the meme here.  Yes, she’s really saying that America would be better off with more murderers than climate activists.  See four of the six charges filed against Kyle Rittenhouse below.

Flynn really did say this.

I wonder if he went on, “And the very best first step to renew that trust is to throw my perjurious ass in prison. Wait. Did I just say that?”

Funny stuff. On top of everything else, she has “there” misspelled.

While most people of science are non-religious, that’s not true of all.

There are people who say that there is no conflict between faith and reason, though, frankly, it’s hard to see how this makes sense.  I would think that one either believes in a certain thing because there is empirical evidence in support of it, or one doesn’t require such evidence.  Can one have it both ways?

So sorry to hear this. I had the honor of meeting him when I was at Georgetown, from 1977-79.

My advisor, who was very close with Thompson, once told me that when he’d meet each incoming class of basketball players, he’d take them first to the library, and tell them, “What happens in this building is your highest responsibility. Get a fine education, and do not make any compromises on that. If you happen to play some ball over the next four years, that’s good too.”

That’s class.  That’s greatness.

Trump’s new pandemic adviser is pushing a “herd immunity” approach to the coronavirus—a stance that has concerned health experts and underscored White House officials’ use of the coronavirus crisis to win political influence. Scott Atlas, a senior fellow at Stanford University’s Hoover Institution who was brought on to advise Trump on COVID-19 earlier this month, is spearheading the herd immunity approach, which involves lifting restrictions on social and business interactions to spread the virus through most of the population, protecting the vulnerable while the healthy build up resistance to the disease.  (more…)

According to the American Energy Society, in 2019, there were 38 days when US utilities got more electricity from hydroelectric, wind and solar generation than from coal.  Through June 2020, there were 122 days when hydro, wind and solar out-produced coal, including every day in the month of April and 28 days in May.

Unbridled capitalism is a double-edged sword.  Yes, it’s the driving force behind many social ills: war, poverty, crime, ignorance, pollution, and disease.  Yet, under the right conditions, there is nothing stronger than free-market economics when it comes to making a positive change.  Right now we see that renewable energy is so inexpensive, and the hard costs of operating coal plants so high, that the market, at least here in the U.S., can’t seem to get rid of coal fast enough.

Good news for those of us with lungs.

A recent Military Times poll of active duty members of the U.S. Armed Forces shows Biden ahead of Trump by a margin of 50% – 38%, and 42% said they had a “very unfavorable” view of the president.  But how can this be?  Democrats are normally viewed, at least by war hawks, as weak on national defense.  What gives?  (more…)

Given that 3 people have now died in the last few days in clashes between Black Lives Matter protesters and Far Right supporters of President Trump, is it too much to consider that if irresponsible actors on both sides don’t stop pouring fuel in the fire, that there could be a serious escalation to something resembling the Northern Ireland troubles – with paramilitary groups on both sides carrying out tit for tat killings, with bombings and gun battles on the streets of US cities, and both police and national guard coming under sustained organised hit and run attack?
