Here’s an essay from the libertarian Cato Institute, arguing that Trump is a protectionist, because of the tariffs he placed on Canada, immediately causing both a blow to U.S. manufacturers and retaliation from our northern neighbor. I haven’t read the article past its opening paragraphs, because nothing could possibly be less interesting about our president at this point than his status vis-a-vis free trade. (more…)

I hate to reprint memes that have egregious grammatical errors in them; here we have “less lawns” where it should be “fewer lawns,” because a lawn is a discrete object.

Having said that, what a great point.  There are few things more enchanting than super-healthy vegetable gardens with lots of different species, fertilized with home-grown compost.

In my composting hey-day, I had a wonderful mixture of my daughter’s hamsters’ bedding, leaves, grass clippings, longhorn manure, fruits, vegetables, peelings, stale bread, coffee grounds and filters, tea leaves, tissues, paper towels, egg cartons, toilet paper rolls, nut shells, corn cobs, fruit and avocados pits and wine corks.  Water and turn once a month.  Rototill into garden soil every spring.

The owner of this unique contraption could have had his air conditioning fixed, but why go to all the trouble and expense when there is such an elegant alternate solution?

This reminds me of so many of the renewable energy concepts that come into and out of my inbox each week.  Will this Rube Goldberg machine generate energy?  Will it do so cost-effectively?  Not in a million years.

I just received an invitation to comment on the following:

The United States is doing VERY WELL, thanks to President Trump’s STRONG leadership. We cannot trust the left-wing media to report the TRUTH, which is why President Trump is counting on Patriots, like YOU, to help us break through the Fake News filter. Please take the Official Trump Coronavirus Approval Poll NOW to tell us what you think.

By what possible metric is the United States doing “very well?” (more…)

Let me take a stab.

Keep in mind that Evangelicals are Christians in an extremely narrow and perverted sense of the word.  These people’s behavior has nothing whatsoever to do with the life and teachings of Christ; rather, it’s defined by xenophobia, homophobia, misogyny, demonization of the poor, indifference of others’ suffering, mercilessness, white supremacy, and intolerance.

Trump is the perfect exemplar.

It’s true that uneducated Republicans believe his lies, but I don’t think it’s true of those at the upper end of the scale.  If I were to ask my mom, e.g., if the president is a habitual liar, I think she’d answer in the affirmative, but quickly qualify this with something like, “It’s true that he’s a bad person, but he has good ideas.” (more…)

Here’s one from the “cuts like a knife” department.  Make that “cuts like a saber.”

Yesterday, President Trump spoke on familiar themes at his coronavirus briefing, before calling on S.V. Dáte, HuffPost’s White House correspondent, who asked: “Do you regret, at all, all the lying you’ve done?

Oh my. (more…)

I’m certainly not the first to ask what precisely is meant by the phrase “make America great again.” If a typical Trump supporter were to answer that question honestly, he’d probably say things like white-dominated, Christian, heterosexual, militarily aggressive, deregulated, unsubsidized, and sink-or-swim.  Of course, progressives don’t see it that way, but that’s not the issue here. I don’t claim to have any special understanding of the sensibilities of voters in the sleepy Virginia town of Luray, but is it a good idea for its major to make a brutally racist remark about a black woman running for vice president?

Aren’t people offended by that?  Doesn’t someone want to knock his teeth out?

If I lived in Luray, I’d write a letter to every official in state government explaining how incensed I was that Mayor Barry Presgraves had just disgraced my town in the national news headlines, and demanding that he be removed immediately.

Here’s a thought (at left) that ought to make you smile.  Yes, (Fox News anchor) Tucker Carlson, that’s the plan indeed.

Let’s see…..America gets:

• A new tax code, reversing huge cuts for the super-rich that came at the expense of looting the Treasury

• A return to the Paris Accord and a relaunch of a policy of environmental stewardship (more…)
