Who won the award for “Worst Year in Energy” for 2019?  Was it Rick Perry, who resigned as Energy Secretary when his connection to the Ukraine scandal became evident?  Could be.  But don’t count out the owner of the largest private coal enterprise in the Unites States and close friend of the president, Bob Murray.   Because of Murray’s criminality and his failed libel lawsuit against HBO, John Oliver barbecued Murray, as shown below. When my daughter Valerie was young I played “Give Peace a Chance” for her, and I explained, “This is among the most important pieces of music ever written.”

If I were king of the world, I would a) ban these things, and b) do what I could to convince my subjects that lawns, sidewalks and gutters need not be completely free of grass clippings and fallen leaves.

In this photo of a sea in the eastern part of Siberia, it certainly appears that something is boiling.  In fact, however, these are bubbles of methane rising to the surface, but they’re actually being released not by evaporation but by the melting of the permafrost that formerly held them in place. The graph here shows atmospheric CO2 concentrations over 800,000 years, approximately four times the length of time that humankind has been on this planet.  To avert catastrophic effects of climate change, we desperately need to bring this figure back to 350 asap.
