One may say that the content of the meme here is obscene. I would submit, however, that while extreme wealth isn’t a problem, situations like these are, where you and I, through our taxes, are picking up the tab for the greed of the Walton family, whose employees are paid so poorly that 30% of them are on public assistance.
It couldn’t have been both, right?
Well, maybe. While extreme right-wing forces are gaining strength in many places around the world, the free press, the only mechanism preventing would-be autocrats from rising to power, has enjoyed a few good moments recently. (more…)

Like all little kids, mine would often make messes, perhaps knocking over a glass of water at the dinner table or dropping a plate of food. Of course, incidents like these tend to be somewhat traumatic, as the person feels clumsy and ashamed. I would always try to lessen that feeling of self-blame, but use it as a “teachable moment” at the same time. (more…)
Anyone who loves a good prank will get a charge out of what happened to Blackrock CEO Larry Fink, the target of a hoax the size of all outdoors (quite literally).
The only thing that would make this any better is if it had a happy ending, and Blackrock really were pursuing an investment strategy built around environmental sustainability.
Here’s a good, albeit fairly general, article on plant-based meat: how it’s finding its way onto restaurant menus, its capacity to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, etc.

The United States needs to award a daily prize for the news event that best epitomizes contemporary American culture. My vote for yesterday’s winner goes to Walmart, for ordering its workers to remove video game signs and displays that depict violence from stores nationwide, while continuing to sell guns. Fake guns killing fake people: atrocity. Real guns killing real people: good business. (more…)
Fabulous point here. As you’re reading this, there are many millions of people working in more than 200,000 groups whose purpose is environmental and social justice. If you were to read the names of these groups at one per second, you’d be reading for two and one-half days.
That’s a lot of horsepower for the good guys.
Nowadays, more and more people are becoming aware of the importance of creating sustainable systems in our society. In order to combat the threat of dwindling resources, businesses and governments are starting to explore environmentally conscious alternatives on a variety of fronts.
