It’s hard to look at the photo here and not be moved by these incredibly intelligent and sensitive creatures. Wouldn’t you like to give them both a big hug?
But elephant numbers have dropped by 62% over the last decade, and they could be mostly extinct by the end of the next decade, largely due to the enormous profit earned by poachers selling ivory into Asian markets.
It’s long past time for an international ban on ivory trade.

I’m going to take a wild guess and suggest that the guy living here doesn’t have a 75″ flat screen TV on which he watches Monday Night Football with his beer-swilling friends.

Given that macro-economics isn’t an exact science, there are many opinions on the causes and effects of the plummeting price of crude (down 6.6%) today. One, given on today’s edition of NPR’s “Marketplace,” is that the developed world has accepted the reality of climate change and it’s working full-bore on reducing carbon emissions. Everyone with lungs needs to believe that’s true.

Here’s a novel concept in energy storage: a wind turbine integrated with its own mass that can be moved against gravity to generate and store potential energy which is then converted via a generator to electricity when required. I have the thought expressed in the meme here constantly. In addition to catastrophic climate change, we have the retrogression into fascism and tribalism, genocide and mass starvation, all of which receive a small fraction of the attention we pay to professional football and the country music awards.
Here’s a short but wonderful video that presents what five large European cities are doing to reduce emissions, while improving the quality of their peoples’ lives.
It’s hard to imagine what these folks think of the U.S. at this point.
