This is the type of meme that sends one running to Google for corroboration: Is anyone, even Louie Gohmert (R-TX), stupid enough to make such a remark?

The answer, sadly, is yes.

This is a harbinger of what’s about to happen as Team Trump goes down for trying to overthrow the U.S. government.  Brace yourself for what’s bound to be a never-ending series of phrases used to modify “witch hunt”: politically-motivated, vindictive, mean-spirited, partisan, treasonous, and traitorous.

This isn’t going to be pleasant, but, like having one’s wisdom teeth extracted, there is no other route to health.

Here’s the “thought for today” from Wordsmith.org:

We are on the cusp of this time where I can say, “I speak as a citizen of the world” without others saying, “God, what a nut.” -Lawrence Lessig, professor and activist (b. 3 Jun 1961) (more…)

Lots of truth here.

Suppose you’re a party whose platform consists of racism, xenophobia, homophobia, the proliferation of assault weapons, banning abortion, the rejection of science, and the Big Lie.

How much education do you really want voters to have?

It’s no secret that we Americans are capable of enormous stupidity, but here’s one I didn’t see coming.

Suppose:

You’re a high-ranking Republican senator who’s been working for decades to block the passage of common sense gun laws.

You see that the mass shooting of our schoolchildren has the vast majority of Americans livid with rage at the lawmakers who are single-handedly responsible for the carnage.

You decide to hold a town hall meeting, expecting a calm and mellow scene.

Now, that’s stupid.

There are myriad differences between the American and Canadian societies:

– Canadians don’t seem to have a cult of anti-intellectualism that is so vibrant and in-your-face here.

– Outside of Big Oil, they don’t let huge corporate interests (medicine, pharma, guns, etc.) pull them around by the nose.

– They’re far more civil with one another than we are.  They don’t have a culture of division, exclusion, and hate. (more…)

From this piece in Newsweek:  Former President Donald Trump’s “Save America” political action committee (PAC) on Tuesday sent an email to subscribers that linked to an article that claims Governor Brian Kemp’s victory in last week’s Republican gubernatorial primary was the result of voter fraud.

It’s pretty clear where all this is going, that is, if it wasn’t before: Trump needs no evidence whatsoever to claim that any election result he doesn’t like is the product of fraud.  And we’re talking massive fraud; Kemp won by 50 points, a margin of 3:1.

Haven’t we seen enough of this?

All Americans have the sense, at least in a vague way, that there is something going on here that is very, very wrong.  As we look at the meme here, we wonder: what are the main differences between Finland and us as societies?

I submit it’s money.  The United States’ GDP, #1 on Earth, is 80 times larger that Finland’s, which ranks #42.

There’s not enough money there to get anyone excited about screwing with the Finns, coming in there with Fox News, desperately trying to convince them that their president, a doddering old fool who stole the election from his predecessor, that immigrants are taking their jobs, that they need more guns to protect themselves from would-be attackers, that they must ban certain books to prevent their kids from becoming socialists or transsexuals, that environmentalists are commies, or that their government planned their exposure to COVID-19.

No one cares, because there isn’t enough money to drive all the idiocy that’s happening in front of Americans’ eyes.

Not a bad place to raise your kids, given a choice.

The gentleman shown here, custom-making child-sized coffins for the 19 kids shot at the most recent school shooting massacre, is certainly trending in our news, perhaps if only because what he’s doing reminds us of our youth, when no one worried about getting killed.

My future daughter-in-law is a teacher’s aide.  Her salary puts her  barely above the poverty line.  Her position, like everyone in public education, means virtual impotence in dealing with unruly and defiant kids, and that is pitiable.  Among her stressors is wondering each morning if today will be her turn to take a bullet, along with her classroom full of students, which is unthinkable.

Now we’re talking about issuing her a gun and wishing her good luck.

Collectively, we wonder what’s going so wrong with American public education, and certainly there is no single answer.  But what we’re asking of our teachers is just absurd.  We are getting what we so richly deserve.

Those looking for inspiration in a world dominated by tragedy, stupidity, hatred, and cowardice can enjoy what’s happening in Eastern Europe, where little Ukraine is standing up courageously against the barbaric Russian invasion.

Here’s a report to the effect that even the Russian Orthodox Clerics, formerly completely devoted to Putin, are breaking ranks with the tyrant.

Most Americans would give anything to see our country display even a small fraction of this bravery in defense of what is right.

The would-be EV manufacturer Aptera, whose prototype shown here (unchanged  from 2005) says:
Join Aptera on our mission to transform the way we move. Many of our 15,000 reservation holders are also investors. Invest as we aim to build the world’s most efficient solar electric vehicle.
Craig: Is this a joke?
Reader Jim Russell: It’ll cost you $1000 to find out.
Craig: Ha!!!!!
Seriously, who invests in a company that’s been raising money for decades to build an unsafe and idiot-looking car?  Doesn’t this strike people as stupid beyond measure?
