The meme here suggests that “we’ve learned nothing.” I don’t think that’s true at all. Almost everyone in America has learned what people around the world already know:
a) The indiscriminant selling of war weapons to unscreened young people results in the deaths of incredible numbers of our schoolchildren.
b) Certain people are stupid enough to believe there is some other cause for the stats here, e.g., we don’t have enough guns.
c) Big money couldn’t possibly give a shit about the safety of your children.
We’ve learned a great deal, especially that the American people appear to be powerless to turn this around.
As suggested at left, some folks believe that psychiatric drugs cause gun violence, reasoning that many shooters are, in fact, on such drugs.
Apparently it doesn’t occur to them that anyone who commits such a crime is mentally ill, and virtually all those who seek treatment for mental illness will be prescribed drugs (whether they are effective on not).
Thus there is a huge correlation between those on psychiatric drugs and those who commit acts of gun violence.
But if from that you infer that one causes the other, you’re simply are not too bright.
A reader sent me this and notes, Investigating a pathetic bully.
One Barb Meadows notes: Let’s go!!
Seriously. Let’s replace “weighing” with “indicting.” It’s not a crime to be a “pathetic bully,” but it is to try to overturn an election and thus overthrow the federal government.
From the “Foundation for Individual Rights in Education”:
Free speech doesn’t just mean having everyone agree with you and living in an echo chamber. There are lots of things that I don’t agree with, but if someone else believes those things—that’s their right. If you agree, sign the petition below to protect students’ rights to free speech on campus.
This is cute. America can ban military-style semiautomatic weapons.
The issue here lies in the word “can.” Yes, Republicans can act honorably and bravely, just like I can get into incredible condition and start running half-marathons, meaning that there are no external forces preventing me. The problem is that I do not have the faintest inclination to do that.
Now that Americans’ hatred for politicians who refuse to defend our schoolchildren has crescendoed into a deafening roar, we’re starting to see a few Republicans give a bit of ground on common sense gun laws.
Make no mistake, however; this movement has nothing to do with our kids’ safety; it’s purely a function of these cowards’ desperation to be re-elected.
As mentioned previously, 2GreenEnergy “headquarters” is located in a rural, “God and country” part of California. Yet even here, locals are starting to notice a back-off on yard decorations (like the flags here) that announce the owner’s allegiance to Trump and the cult of MAGA.
Needless to say, this is a very good sign. It’s as if there is a tacit understanding that the group is dissolving, and that those who haven’t gotten the memo are looking quite stupid indeed.
But stupidity is only part of the issue; it’s equally about violence. If I say, “Don’t tread on me,” what I’m really saying is, “I perceive you as a threat, but in fact, I’m the greater threat to you. If you tread on me, I’ll hurt you badly.”
That’s a lot of hostility, shouted out to a world that has too much of it already. We have an authoritarian invasion of a neighboring democracy, where innocent people are being tortured and executed, and, here at home, we have little schoolchildren being taken out as if they were termites. Do we really need some ass**** upping the stakes?
It will be interesting to see how all this unfolds, as Trump is indicted for his coup attempt, and continues to whine like a baby that the entire U.S. criminal justice system is corrupt, and motivated by partisan politics.
In the near future, tens of millions of Trump supporters will be confronted with evidence that a) there is no evidence of significant fraud in the 2020 presidential election, and b) Trump’s attempt to overturn the election was an act of treason.
This is the type of s*** we can expect in response to every legal move that is taken against Trump. If the grand jury indicts him, we’ll have to listen to how every member is a Radical Leftist.
Same in New York City.
And God knows, same in the January 6th Commitee and the DoJ.
The American people have to ask themselves: What’s more likely?
Trump is an honest servant of the United States who is being unfairly railroaded by the Deep State, etc.
OK, so what’s the difference between each of these incidents and the adoption of laws that will save the lives of our schoolchildren? Here, we’re talking about legislation that would shrink a multibillion-dollar industry, one that has an enormously powerful lobby behind it.
U.S. congresspeople have two priorities:
1) Ensuring that they’re re-elected, and
2) Doing what’s right for the American people.
In other words, anything that’s good for you and me actually can happen, but only if it makes re-election more likely.
IMO, we need to get used to this, and not act astonished when some Republican scolds a sports team for supporting gun reform, or advocates for limiting the number of school entrances, arming teachers, adding more guns to our population, and so forth.
Unless we’re able to get money out of politics, expecting any other form of behavior is like thinking your dog is going to start playing the piano.
