It hasn’t been a good last few years for law enforcement here in the United States, which makes me feel sorry for all those many police personnel who serve with courage and honor.

Here’s another indication that America may have reached the limit of its patience with the gun lobby and the routine massacre of our schoolchildren.

Boston Garden, home to the Boston Celtics, asks for the support of its patrons.

Now, of course, this is Massachusetts, which: (more…)

It hasn’t been a good last few years for the United States, and world opinion reflects that.

Perhaps the most significant issue, as shown in the bar charts below, is the erosion of democracy, as exemplified in the attempted coup, orchestrated by former president Donald Trump. (more…)

The author of the tweet here has a great deal of common sense, though there are only a few present-day interpretations of the Constitution that seem to miss the mark.  In particular:

The idea that the Second Amendment prohibits us from enacting common sense gun laws is ludicrous, and I’m not the only one with this opinion.  U.S. Supreme Court Justice Warren Burger once said, “The gun lobby’s interpretation of the Second Amendment is one of the greatest pieces of fraud, I repeat the word fraud, on the American people by special interest groups that I have ever seen in my lifetime.”

The notion that “corporations are people” and should therefore be afforded the rights to free speech as guaranteed under the First Amendment is arguably even worse.

Where we’re going with the 14th and 15th Amendments and the right of all citizens to vote, regardless of race, is anyone’s guess.  In the American South, Republicans are removing ballot boxes from predominantly black neighborhoods.  If that doesn’t violate the Constitution, it’s hard to imagine what does.

As we examine the meme here, we realize that, sadly, there are many reasons that the United States is not going in this direction.

We don’t really have a sense of society, and even if we did, we don’t care about inequality, or what happens here in the long run. If we’re surrounded by sick and uneducated people, that’s just too damn bad for them.

This is why “Build Back Better” is a losing proposition.  “Better” means that we actually care about what life here is going to be like in 50 years, and today’s Americans have very little interest in the subject.

There are millions of people who aren’t sitting still while Congress ignores another school massacre.

Wonderful to see.

Here’s an ad for a telescoping flagpole (read: cheap, cheesy) on which you can announce to the neighbors your version of “patriotism” this Memorial Day.

Two comments I particularly appreciated:

Do you really need that “Don’t tread on me” flag?
The response to which was: Of course. How will the other traitors passing by recognize each other without the yellow flag?
Clever, I thought.
Of course, the flag in question is no more expressive of support to those who attempted to overthrow the U.S. government in 2020-21 than anything else that stands behind Trump, e.g., “Trump 2024!” at this point when the walls of justice are finally crashing down around him.
Yet, I have to admit that there is something special about the disgusting misuse of the Gadsden flag that pulls this all together better than anything else.

America may not be unique in the world for its culture of rugged individualism, but it most certainly is for the role that guns  play within its society.

Consider for a moment that about one-half of our congresspeople believe that asking prospective gun owners if they have a history of violent crime in which guns were used violates their rights under the Second Amendment.

People don’t just wake up one morning with asinine thoughts like these in their heads; as the cartoon here suggests, they were raised from a young age to believe that guns are as natural a part of America life as barbecues, tomato gardens, and fast cars.

Shifting this paradigm is not going to be a piece of cake.
