Here, are two readers’ comments on the meme here; my responses are beneath each.
Scott Kozel:  Socialism killed over 100 million people in Europe in the 20th Century.
What happened in the USSR and other countries was horrible, but it had little to nothing to do with socialism as a form of government.  Rather, it was totalitarianism in which the entire populations of people were systematically crushed by cruel tyrants.  Democratic socialism as it exists in Europe today has no resemblance to that whatsoever.
Scott may be among the many people who know this very well, but carry on this misrepresentation anyway.  Not very laudable, IMO.
(2GreenEnergy supporter) Gary Tulie: The British under capitalism were responsible for around 10 million deaths from famine in India, and a million in Ireland – all dead because of political decisions rather than any inherent unavoidable natural catastrophe. Many more died because of the transatlantic slave trade, and around 10 million died under the brutal capitalism of king Leopold of Belgium in the Congo. If you look at total deaths arising from colonial capitalism, it’s quite possible the numbers exceed those who died under communism.
In addition to what I wrote in response to Scott, I would point out that pure, free-market capitalism as envisioned by Rand exists nowhere on the planet.  In the United States, for example, we have the Federal Reserve, and numerous entities that regulate Wall Street, and the entire world of banking.
In the absence of such intervention, the collapse of the entire economic system, e.g., what happened in 2008, would be commonplace.  When Ayn Rand was popularly accepted 75 years ago, this may not have been widely understood, but it certainly is today.

Moreover, all Americans receive a bounty of valuable services that are paid for by their tax dollars:

Infrastructure, police, fire fighting, criminal justice, national defense, public education, labor laws, auto and food safety standards, air traffic control, TSA, libraries, emergency medical care, environmental regulation, social security, Medicare, the National Archives, national parks, bank regulations and deposit insurance, copyright and patent laws, federal dams to provide electrical power, flood control, the Weather Service, the Federal Housing Authority, consulates and embassies, FEMA, veterans affairs, public water systems, monitoring of all international cargo, NASA, border protection, and the National Institutes of Health.

Here’s a guy with a sane perspective.

Nice going.

Let’s make this happen.

The volume of the national conversation on gun violence has intensified recently.  We’ve come to learn, with all too much clarity, what happens when mentally unstable people have legal access to assault weapons, and we’re calling for change.

From Bertrand Russell:
“America is sick and her sickness endangers the whole world. Given America’s immense power and resources, a cure must be found within. The first thing that is needed is an education teaching that hate must be avoided, that excellence does not consist in violence. To achieve this change of outlook is an immense task which America’s “Radicals” must attempt to carry out. Whether the necessary heroism will be forthcoming, I do not know. We can only hope that it may be so.”
Russell wrote this mid-Century, before the  s*** really hit the fan here, in terms of national insanity.  It’s hard to imagine what he’d say about a country that elected a criminal sociopath, and that now, 500 days after his departure, still counts on him to guide his political party, which he does with great relish, with an array of racism, promotion of violence, lies, fraud, and treason.
Sir, if you thought it was bad in post-WW2 America, you would not be able to believe it now.

More Dead Kids

Because of my wife’s interest in horse racing, I’ve been to the track many times, taking a shot at “handicapping,” or trying to determine the winner of a certain upcoming race based on the entrants’ past performances.  Sometimes I’ll look at the records of “maiden” horses (those who have yet to win a race) and get the feeling that they are all so slow that it’s hard to imagine any of them winning– though, of course, one of them has to. It’s important to keep in mind that most gun owners are not NRA members, and, generally, vehemently disapprove of the organization’s indifference to safety, which make the danger of mass shootings many times higher than it would be if guns were registered, background checks were enforced, owners were trained, and assault weapons were banned. Indicting Trump

There is speculation that “no one wants to be the first (to indict Trump), but everyone and his dog wants to be second.”

I can’t say, but it sure will be a great day when the ball starts rolling here.

When you have an ultra-right-wing cause, say, the concept that Trump is a gift, sent from God to save America–and you lose Jon Voight, you know you’re completely lost.

This is the equivalent of Fox News’ admitting that Joe Biden is actually a sane and decent person, or that Vladimir Putin doesn’t have the legal and moral right to indiscriminately torture and  execute innocent Ukrainian civilians while the rest of the world looks on with admiration, so deeply envious of his strength and power.

Stuff like this doesn’t happen even day of the week.

The assertion in the meme here is simply false.  Iceland, Canada, Australia, and Sweden have virtually identical rates of consumption of drugs like antidepressants to the United States (12% – 15%), though they have almost no gun violence.  That’s because, in general, they have strict laws that govern the sale of guns.

I saw a similar assertion the other day to the effect that Godlessness causes gun violence.  Well, just look.  Monotheism is virtually nonexistent in Japan, but so are guns.  Result: Japan has virtually no gun deaths.

To the people glomming onto baseless claims:  Is there some rule that says you’re not allowed to access data and think for yourselves?

One might think that political corruption, insofar as it’s illegal, would be carefully hidden from view.  One might hope that the political leanings of our elected officials are based on their personal philosophy and sense of duty to the people they serve.

But that doesn’t explain why a) Marco Rubio is attacking the NBA because they advocated for “common-sense gun laws,” and b) he has received $3,303,355 in campaign contributions from the NRA.
