A reader asks, “Is this (Canada) an option?”
Of course it is, for people with passports, who are wealthy enough to travel a couple thousand miles round-trip and absorb all the associated costs.
I join millions of Americans in saying I’d be happy to make a donation to a fund that provides abortions, free of all cost, to low-income patients.
The “stench” associated with the overturning of Roe v. Wade is considerable, most notably because four Supreme Court justices lied on this subject during the senate confirmation hearings.
The behavior of Clarence Thomas, however, may be worse. In particular, he’s married to a woman who directly attempted to overthrow the U.S. government, and he failed to recuse himself from a case that involved his own self-interest.
That’s malodorous, putting it kindly.
As time passes and the noose tightens around the necks of those who attempted the coup, we’re continuing to learn a great about the country we live in.
Something that fascinates me is the far-right “news” media’s support of those who tried to overthrow the U.S. government. Here we see Jeff Clark appearing on Fox News, whining that the Justice Department executed a duly authorized search warrant on his home.
OK, but how far will this go?
Will there not be a point at which they fold their tent and admit that Team Trump did everything in its power to overturn the results of a free and fair election? Or at least stop covering the story and move on to baseball scores?
Keep in mind that this whole justice action is going to take place over a period of years, and that there are literally hundreds of Republican politicians involved at the federal and state levels (not to mention the foot-soldier morons).
Are they going to maintain that the entirety of the Justice Department is manufacturing evidence and corruptly prosecuting all these people?
As we’ve already seen, anything’s possible.
The ban on abortion in a large and growing number of states, driven as it is by far-right-wing Republicans, may work politically in the most backward and ignorant regions of the country. But how is this going to fly for the GOP on a national level? (more…)
During the darkest days of U.S. policing that followed the murder of dozens of unarmed black men over the past few years, I used to ruminate on how sorry I felt for the hundreds of thousands of thoroughly decent law enforcement personnel who are now suddenly regarded as if they themselves knelt on George Floyd’s neck. Former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder is calling for the disbarment of all lawyers who participated in the coup attempt. Sounds good to me, and everyone else who cares about justice and rule of law.
Yet it raises the question: How far will all this go? How about the prosecution of each one of the fake electors? What about the removal of all congresspeople who participated?
We can see why this is going to take a while.
Here’s a voice that speaks to so many of us.
“How wrong can this go?” our friends asked us. “How much power does a U.S. president really have to change the nation’s social fabric and destroy the core structure of the U.S. government?”
Well, I suppose we found out.
We never had a government that worked for all the people, but returning us to a point where we were, going into 2016, is going to take a generation.
