Jean de La Bruyère was a 17th Century French philosopher who made a very interesting remark about the (apparently few) people of the day whose only pleasure was the acquisition of money.

I’m afraid I have bad news for Jean’s eternal spirit about the state of humankind as it exists today, 400 years later, at least in America.  Here and now, those who derive pleasure by living virtuous lives are extremely rare.

When my kids were in their teens , we used to have discussions about the things that were important to them.  At a certain point, they told me that money was the only thing that counted in their adolescent social lives.  I asked, “Don’t things like honesty and kindness matter?”  They said, “Dad, you’re from a different point in history.”  I suppose so.

In principle, you’re right.  In practice, we need to recall that, on the campaign trail, a smiling Mike Pence famously said, “I’m a Christian, an American, and a Republican — in that order.”

Now, what effects that actually caused to our country and the world is a matter of debate.  It was clearly a branding statement to Christian voters.

The corruption in the ultra-right wing is so pervasive that it will take an enormous amount of time, energy, and resources that could have been spent addressing other problems, but we need to start somewhere. Thanks to AOC for leading the charge here.

People are worried about a “red wave” in the midterms.  Really?  How much appetite does the average American have for blatant, hardcore criminality like this?

Key points from this CNBC article include:

Ex-President Donald Trump likely broke the law by “corruptly” attempting to obstruct the confirmation of Joe Biden’s Electoral College win by Congress on Jan. 6, 2021, a federal judge said.

Judge David Carter wrote that Trump with his ally, lawyer John Eastman, “launched a campaign to overturn a democratic election, an action unprecedented in American history.”

I still don’t understand the use of the adverb “likely.” What about “clearly” or “obviously?”

Regardless of the chain of events leading up to and including January 6th, Trump is on tape bullying Georgia’s Secretary of State in an effort to “find” votes that did not exist.

The time has come.

A reader sent me this and notes: “The greatest #American of all-time Jesus Christ stands with the #truckers in #Ottawa #Canada against the #covid_19 #covid #vaccine.”

I normally refrain from ridiculing others’ religious beliefs, but this calls for an exception, if only to ask how Jesus Christ could be considered an American.

We constantly ask ourselves where our galactic level of stupidity came from, and why we’re in this mess.  I don’t think you need to look much further.

OMG, this is getting hot.

It’s amazing to see that so many of the “conservatives” at the highest level of government are completely corrupt, and that this is unraveling for all to see.

This particular piece of the story would be great news if there were any way to force her to testify, and not plead the 5th Amendment.

The truth is going to have to come from subpoena’d communications, or from minions who flip.

In any case, if there is no justice here, the United States will have lost its republic, that which Americans have so proudly and bravely protected since its inception.

Here’s an article from NPR that provides a partial explanation for the slow adoption of wind energy in the U.S.: misinformation.

Americans seem to have a voracious appetite for BS, regardless of the subject matter, and that hunger is amplified even further when it comes to clean energy and other climate change mitigation strategies.

Donald Trump famously claimed that wind turbines cause cancer, and he appears to be ready to launch into an attack even when it’s a total non sequitur, as we saw when he was asked about Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, specifically, how he thought it would end. (more…)

Regarding the meme here, concerning Clarence Thomas and his insurrectionist wife, a reader says:  Or you should be impeached if you don’t have the personal integrity to resign.

I have bad news about Clarence Thomas’ integrity.  If he had any, we wouldn’t be having this discussion.

It should come as a surprise to no one that, as half of the United States shifts (actually, squirts) to the extreme right, abortion rights are in the process of going away–at least in the red states.

Given that we live in an age where we can choose to live wherever we please, this raises the question: do you really want to live in a state with laws that are oppressive to women, LGBTQs, and people of color?

If you were a surgeon who performed abortions, you might ask yourself if you’re willing to have the local Bible-thumpers tell you how you can practice gynecology.  This may mean some level of exodus of educated people from the bright red states.

In medicine, such a phenomenon is already in place.  A friend’s wife was offered a “signing bonus” of $600K to do her residency in North Dakota.  Now, of course, a lot of this is due to the terrible climate, but there are similar significant “hardship pay incentives” for doctors to come to temperate regions that happen to be cultural wastelands like Tennessee.
