Here’s Ike Eisenhower defending his 90% top tax rate on corporations, at the same time the top rate on individuals was 70%.

Nowadays we’re being told that “real Americans” need to oppose the idea of taxing the rich, as it’s a form of socialist tyranny being forced on us by the “radical left.”

Guess who hates the concept “tax the rich.”

The author of the meme here saw an opportunity to make a comparison to present-day Russia, where Putin is aggressively redrawing the borders in Eastern Europe.

How far west he goes before he’s stopped is anybody’s guess.

The fact that we have sociopaths with unlimited power sitting on nuclear weapons should be of grave concern to us all.

It’s our hope that the International Court of Justice gets the opportunity to prosecute Putin for any number of different war crimes based on what he’s already done in Ukraine.  Sadly, we have a long way to go before that becomes a real possibility.

There is a point to be made here, but the idea behind the law is to encourage home ownership, based on the (reasonable) belief that home owners are better, more engaged citizens.

We do not want apathy and alienation from government–especially now, where voting rights and trust in the election process is under siege by Trump and company.

This is funny, but it’s not true; these people believe every syllable of the b.s. they’re consuming.

That’s what make all this so dangerous.

Where do we think the skyrocketing incidence of violence against Asian-Americans comes from?  The Gods of Olympus?

A reader sent me something to the effect that Biden is at fault for our high gasoline prices, commenting that, from the day he took office, he’s done everything in his power to increase America’s dependence on foreign energy resources.  Apparently, many people find it credible that a person like Joe Biden has a covert intention to harm the country he’s served for a full 50 years.

In any case, from what I can discern, as is the case with all large-scale political and economic phenomena, this is a complicated issue that gets oversimplified and brutally spun in the media.

It’s been clear ever since I was a boy that Republicans are insincere when they say they want small government.  They want an extremely powerful government when it comes to enforcing their values on the common American, i.e., a country dominated by the ultra-rich, one that features violence, racism, sexism, and cruelty.

Such a nation is repugnant to the majority of people, and this cannot exist without strong external forces.

Larry Shultz reacted to my post that began: At a certain point in U.S. history, it appeared that Americans had grasped what Rachel Carson said here.  For a brief period, it looked like our country was on a path towards rethinking its practices that are doing such great violence to the natural environment.
He wrote: We did not like the “Limits to Growth” study, thus we created predicaments rather than solution pathways.  Now our choices center around less severe predicaments today or more severe predicaments tomorrow depending upon our political and biological future discount rates.
Astute comment.  Like alcoholics and drug addicts, we have a huge discount rate.  We know what we’re doing is harmful, but we demand instant gratification regardless of the expense to the future.
In fact, our situation is even worse.  An alcoholic may be aware that his liver is giving out, and that he himself will one day have to suffer accordingly.  Conversely, the people who call the shots on this planet today really couldn’t care less about what happens here a generation or two hence.

It is easy to understand that conservatives want to imbue our kids with their values, and, even though I don’t share those values, I don’t have a huge problem with that.

What I find objectionable about Mike Huckabee’s “Kids (sic) Guide To Fighting Socialism” is its amazingly brazen dishonesty. (more…)

At a certain point in U.S. history, it appeared that Americans had grasped what Rachel Carson said here.  For a brief period, it looked like our country was on a path towards rethinking its practices that were doing violence to the natural environment.

But that was before the anti-vaxxers, the climate deniers, Fox News, the insurrection, the Big Lie, the resurgence of white supremacy, and all the other forms of ignorance and stupidity that have gained such a stranglehold on our nation.

To illustrate how far we’ve strayed, now we have Americans rooting for an authoritarian regime in its invasion of a neighboring democracy.  It’s not pretty.

From this:

Colorado Republican Party chairperson Kristi Burton Brown and other party leaders issued a statement Wednesday calling on secretary of state candidate Tina Peters to suspend her campaign for secretary of state after being indicted by a grand jury on 10 criminal charges related to election tampering.

Yes, it’s painful to have to end a political campaign at any time.  Losing in a tightly contested race in the last few moments is one of them.  But being asked to resign by members of your own party, because you’re only a step away from prison, must hurt like a b****.

Tears.
