I don’t impute any moral goodness to Sasse for what he said here, because it’s no more than politically expedient. As someone said in response, “If you want to show that you’re not a hypocrite, vote against the confirmation of the religious fanatic Trump nominated to the Supreme Court.

There is, however, something to note about this: Trump’s support in the U.S. Senate is foundering, as anyone could have predicted it would at election time with Trump 11% down in the national polls.

Another one of those “would be funny if it weren’t so tragic” posts.

This is how stupid Putin thinks the average American is, and maybe he’s right.

First, how obvious is it that this is an effort to help Trump, as Americans hate communism?

Secondly, Russia hasn’t been a communist country since 1991.

It’s all so pathetic.

Speaking strictly for myself, I won’t be tuning in because I can’t stand the sound of his voice, and my wife goes into seizures whenever she hears him speak.  We also abhor watching the hateful idiots in his audiences.

All this reminds me of the vast, and in some cases irreparable, damage he’s done to this formerly great nation.

Though the question posed here is obviously rhetorical, let me take a stab: the Vietnam era.

Before that time, there was great unanimity among Americans that government existed, at least in part, to take care of those least able to take care of themselves. Below is a summary of the GOP platform in 1956; note how similar to today’s Democratic values this is.

Especially over the last 40 years, the entire country, at least the two main political parties, has shifted hard to the right, and the GOP finds itself in a place so far to the right that it has never existed in this country’s history. (more…)

Regarding the meme here, a reader notes: You could make a case that any Republican would have failed at a second term. Republicans fight to eliminate budget stuff like FEMA and Pandemic Response teams. They are not planners, so all of them would likely have failed COVID response. (more…)

It’s been so long since the Democratic primaries that I forgot how ferociously intelligent Pete Buttigieg is–until I saw him hand this lady her head on live television (see below).

As shown here, he’s been amazingly effective in many similar situations.

What a fabulous president he would have made; hope to see him succeed in the future.  (more…)

From a reader:

For many, many months now, I’ve been struggling with the ethical dilemma of voting for Joe Biden and, believe it or not, I’m still struggling. Those of you who know me well know how deeply I care about the nuances of our political system. And this choice we have is lose, lose. (more…)

For the months running up to the presidential election, the great American pastime has become predicting its outcome.  In the case of Trump and Biden, perhaps it is a good idea to remind ourselves of the adage above.  Young people have energy, enthusiasm, and, in general, liberalism.  By contrast, old people have slowed down, but have rambled around this planet long enough to have learned a great deal by way of the variety of their lived experiences. Amy Barrett, Trump’s pick to replace Justice Ginsburghas implied that she opposes the landmark 2007 decision Massachusetts vs. Environmental Protection Agency, which gave the federal government the power to regulate greenhouse gas emissions.  What does this, plus the fact that she’s a climate denier, mean for the U.S. government’s power to help protect the planet from climate change?

One can’t see into the future, but this sure does appear to be a catastrophe.  We have just over 4% of the world’s population, but we account for 15% of greenhouse gas emissions, and we hold a huge percentage of the R&D facilities aimed at things like renewable energy and other elements of cleantech. The lady here makes a good point; people wouldn’t be coming out of the woodwork to vote if things were rolling along just fine.

This torrent of early voting also suggests that overall turnout is exceptionally high, which works against Trump as well.
