A whopping 65% of Americans identify as Christians.  Now, 25.4% are Evangelicals, whose version of Christianity has little if anything to do with the teachings of Christ, so that leaves roughly 40% whose lives are driven, at least in part, by a religious devotion to non-violence, love, mercy, charity, tolerance, and forgiveness. A reader sent me the blurb at left.  My response:

It’s not incompetence. He’s very talented at pulling off events that cause great harm to everyone except him and those who happen to be in positions from which they can benefit. Now that he’s president, that means either a) re-election or b) further enrichment.  In turn, that means appealing to amoral rich people with gratuitous tax breaks, and to white supremacists who love to see programs that harm people with brown skin. With all the revolting developments unfolding in U.S. politics on a daily basis, perhaps the only thing to actually like is events that come out of deep, deep left field, like this one:

White nationalist chieftain Richard Spencer says MAGA/alt-right is over?  Trump is an obvious disaster?  Endorses Biden?

How this could actually help Biden remains to be seen.  How many Klansmen will vote for a party that endorses Black Lives Matter?  Four?

In any case, last month it was “Hail, Trump!”  Now it’s this?  I’d sure like to meet whomever saw that one coming.

John S. McCollister is a Republican state senator in the Nebraska Legislature, representing an Omaha district.

One can read this and say something supercilious like “‘Principled Republicans’ is an oxymoron,” or “Better late than never.”

I say, “Good on you.”

Let’s hope this fellow is part of a larger trend.  If this is what bright red Nebraska thinks, that’s a very good sign.

I’m not, but if I were, I’d think twice, based on the reasoning presented here from the Arctic Refuge Defense Campaign.

These folks mean biz.

Yes, it’s true that half of the speakers at the Republican National Convention have “Trump” surnames, but what about the other half?

Well, as suggested at left, this is a very diverse crowd, including those charged with felonies.

This is a criminal administration, and it really doesn’t have a tough time demonstrating that to the world.

Richard Rohr is an American author, spiritual writer, and Franciscan friar, ordained to the priesthood in the Roman Catholic Church in 1970. PBS has called him “one of the most popular spirituality authors and speakers in the world.”

It’s hard to know what to say about his words here, other than “right on.”

It really is time to cut out the silliness, if that’s the right word for it.

Beautifully put, sir.

A Trump spokesperson said recently, “I think you take a look at the great people that President Trump has surrounded himself with, some of the brilliant women and some of the brilliant leaders that we have within this administration. And I would say that overall the president has had a very good track record of hiring excellent people.” (more…)

FWIW, I believe the principle expressed at left is what will drive the 2020 presidential election.  To wit, there must be 10 times more people who voted for Trump in 2016 voting for Biden this year than people crossing in the opposite direction.

Think about this.  There are a lot of people who say, “Look, I made a mistake.  I trusted Trump, but I’m certainly not going to do that twice.  Now try to consider the mindset of a person that goes like this “Oh, I went Democrat in 2016, but now that I’ve seen what a competent and honest prince of a man Donald Trump is, he’s getting my vote, for sure!”

In the last four years, 16 million Americans reached their 18th birthday, including 3.2 million Hispanics.  Now, unfortunately, Trump has almost 30% support from LatinX voters, which is astonishing given that he has done everything conceivable to anger them.

At the same time, 11.2 million people died; because most of these people are older, they tended to be more conservative. (more…)
