The ubiquity of news coverage on the cornavirus has offered the fossil fuel industry an opening no one could have anticipated: the opportunity to claim that our civilization is too busy to worry about anything else.  They’re using this to try to convince lawmakers to delay consideration of things like the “Green New Deal,” or even less aggressive plans in energy efficiency, rooftop solar, electric transportation, and the like.

Of course, environmentalists are pushing back on this, with phrases like, “I’m pretty sure we can walk and chew gum at the same time.”

It’s a time when emotions run in extremes.  Expressions of fabulous warmth and generosity bring us joy.  Callous indifference to others’ suffering makes us sad.  Greedy profiteering in emergency conditions makes us angry.

At least that’s how this doctor reacted, and it’s hard to disagree.

This never should be happening in the United States–and especially not now.

Think about this.  You’re driving along an unlit road, and your car passes one of these lamps, creating the gentlest of breezes that creates a tiny, almost imperceptible bit of light, shining on the road–behind you.  Does that seem practical?

Anyone driving to the grocery store can see that COVID-19 has dramatically reduced demand for gasoline and diesel.  That, coupled with low oil prices, has caused the fossil fuel companies to cut their investment in renewables and other carbon mitigation strategies. (more…)

“Madness” is a harsh word. Can’t we soften it a bit?

After all, about 40% of Americans believe that Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kusher, with no qualifications in science, medicine, project management, government, or diplomacy, is competently bringing peace to the Middle East , managing the opioid crisis, bringing an end to the trade war with China, and handling several other pressing concerns, both international and domestic. Trump has done everything in his power to eliminate fact, reason, and truth from policy-making in the U.S. federal government.  Most of these 1600 former government scientists either quit or were fired, though a few were transferred to positions having nothing to do with science itself.

If we have four more years of this, we’ll have a government that operates purely on the whim of big business, regardless of the horrific consequences it has on the health and safety of all of humankind.

These people promote their product as follows: Spring is coming… are you SunFlower ready? These solar trackers follow the suns azimuth direction like a real sunflower.

Some people may find these aesthetically pleasing; to each one’s own. Being a practical person, however, I find them repulsive, insofar as clean energy advocates need to understand that the levelized cost of energy (LCOE) of a particular source means everything, and, in the case of devices like these, it’s astronomical.
