It would be easy to look at the United States right now, and conclude that all the stupidity, greed, selfishness, dishonesty, corruption and other forms of criminality that underpin our federal government and its state-run “news” agency are happening equally all around the world.  As shown here, that is clearly not the case at all.

Maybe the Americans who are learning about New Zealand will insist that some of that sanity and decency wear off and land here.  Maybe not.

Whoever created this did a workmanlike job.  I would add:

• The respect of the rest of the world

• The trust of anyone considering making a deal with the United States (more…)

Bernie Sanders writes:  Did you know that the United States ranks 53rd on the list of World Freedom Rankings? Americans are not financially free when they are chained to student debt and astronomical health care costs. It’s time to revitalize our democracy.

This is an interesting point, as, yes it’s true that impoverishment and true freedom are mutually exclusive, but this isn’t a criterion that the Freedom House uses to perform their calculations.  From their 2019 Report: (more…)

While this may not sound perfectly scientific, I don’t have a problem using the word “sin” to describe what’s driving climate change.  In fact, if I were a religious person, I don’t think I could find a better term to characterize the greed and selfishness that lie behind our civilization’s continuing practices that trap increasing amounts of radiant energy from solar heat under the atmospheric blanket.  (more…)

White nationalist Sebastian Gorka, former deputy assistant to U.S. president Trump, is promoting a group to compete against the extremely popular AARP (formerly the American Association of Retired Persons) with its 38 million dues-paying members, on the basis of politics.  He writes, “AARP wants you to believe they are a non-partisan organization. But you need to understand WHAT you are supporting if you are an AARP member. AARP backed Obamacare and strict gun control. AMAC (Association of Mature American Citizens) fought AGAINST all of these things. And AMAC fought hard to block the federal funding on abortion, and won.” (more…)

Funny? I thought so.

A surprise to anyone?  Hardly.  This is California, land of freeway traffic and a pretty severe distaste for cruel, racist, wanna-be dictators.

Is Trump a Russian asset?  A useful idiot? Maybe it’s a coincidence that virtually everything Trump does favors Putin at the expense of the United States, and makes it hard for us to protect our democracy.  Only time will tell.

You’ll travel a long way to meet someone who knows more about the business and science of energy than my colleague Stephen Lacey, contributing editor with Greentech Media.  This morning he tweeted: “Usage of the term ‘climate-emergency’ increased 100-fold in the space of 12 months.”  (more…)
