I may have mentioned that I tutor at the local high school in Santa Barbara County, home of 2GreenEnergy “headquarters,” which gives me ample opportunity to speak with teachers.

Unlike the city of Santa Barbara, our little town (Santa Ynez) is actually very “God and Country,” very “red,” so to speak: lots of guns, flags, and pick-up trucks.  I recently asked the teacher of one of the kids I work with, “Given the conservative nature of the locals, I’m curious to know how the faculty here feels about Trump. The horrific rate of deforestation on this planet is based largely on two industries: beef production and building materials.  We’ve had ample conversation of the former here, so let’s hear a bit on the latter.

There are plenty of places on Earth where fans could (and would) be “held accountable” for booing the president, but America most certainly isn’t one of them.  Here, with very few exceptions, we’re free to express whatever thoughts we choose, and that freedom, protected by our constitution, is one of the defining characteristics of our nation. Readers understand that I desperately want to see Trump gone, but if they want to see real passion here, they need to meet my wife.  Becky’s having such a tough time with the day-to-day news about the climate denial, the cruelty, the lawlessness, the lies, the ignorance, the hatred, and so many other things, she’s talking about leaving the country if Trump is re-elected.

Craig: But honey bunch, where would we go?

Becky: New Zealand.

C: But carrot stick, don’t we want to be near the kids?

B: We can visit from anywhere on Earth.

C: Anywhere? Not sure about the commute from the place shown here.

Needless to say, I’m just hoping none of this will be required.

Try as we might, there is no getting around the fact that the United States is a pariah in the world, having become the only one of 188 sovereign countries on the planet that is refusing to work in concert with the people of the world to avoid the most catastrophic effects of climate change.  The Trump administration’s submitting to the United Nations a formal notification of its withdrawal from the Paris agreement is an indelible black mark in American history, one that history will never forget. A reader notes:

There is a huge conceptual misunderstanding in the world of politics and political philosophy.  We keep hearing about the left and the right, which delivers a completely incorrect concept of reality.  It is not left and right – it is – in truth – down or up! (more…)

The notoriously level-headed Financial Times, an international broadsheet daily newspaper with a special emphasis on business and economic news, writes as follows about the ramifications of climate change, based partially on last summer’s heat wave in Europe:

Hot enough for EU? The worst is yet to come. This week, temperatures in Europe reached record levels. But if you want another reason to sweat, ponder this question: have investors priced the cost of climate change? (more…)

From the Washington Post:

The librarians of Citrus County, Fla., had what seemed like a modest wish: A digital subscription to the New York Times. For about $2,700 annually, they reasoned, they could offer their roughly 70,000 patrons an easy way to research and catch up on the news. But when their request came before the Citrus County commission last month, local officials literally laughed out loud. One commissioner, Scott Carnahan, declared the paper to be “fake news.” “I agree with President Trump,” he said. “I will not be voting for this. I don’t want the New York Times in this county.”

Jean: I have a “my dog is smarter than your president'” but I’m too scared of the Trump supporters to put it on my car.

Me:  Love it!  I’m with you, Jean.  My car wouldn’t last 10 minutes up here in “God’s country” with that bumper sticker on it. (more…)
