Notice To All 2GreenEnergy ReadersJust got this from a friend, and I thought I’d pass it on to you.

It’s true, btw.

2GreenEnergy TutoringI may not have mentioned that I act as a tutor for kids in the local schools and colleges; here’s my flier on the subject.  I bring this up because I just got this LinkedIn invitation from a fellow (pictured) I worked with for a couple of semesters in Chemistry and English at the local (incredibly good) prep school.

As I told him in my response:  I can’t tell you how happy I am to hear from you, and especially in the context of all this good news re: your academic achievements!  I knew you had it in you. Please tell your folks (who found and hired me) that I say hi.  You’ve totally made my day.

Facebook Is Home To Some Really Hateful and Ignorant StuffI spend a decent amount of time on Facebook, staying in touch with old friends and trying to build a strong social media presence for 2GreenEnergy.

To say the very least, this activity has its ups and downs; in particular, it’s deeply disturbing to run across people I thought were kind and intelligent who so dramatically uproot my belief.  It’s almost hard to believe.

Here’s a classic example of bigotry and stupidity from the wife of a friend, coupled with a display of extreme beauty in the response.   (more…)

Scientific AmericanToday is the 171st anniversary of the first publication of “Scientific American.”

The very name of the magazine is hopeful, when you think about it.  It’s always been a good time to encourage Americans to be scientific in thinking and behavior.

It’s nauseating to hear our leaders make statements that reveal how completely ignorant and distrustful they are of basic proven truth.  Yet at the time, it can be quite hilarious.  Here are some of (former member of the US House of Representatives — 2007 to 2015) Michelle Bachmann’s greatest hits, for your amusement, followed by these gems from (2012 vice-presidential hopeful) Sarah Palin.

Happy Birthday, Georg HegelIt’s the birthday of German philosopher and theologian Georg Hegel, best known for his observation that human societies evolve via a clash of opposite viewpoints, called dialectics. He theorized that each conflict of contraries results in something new which then itself winds up getting opposed—so on to infinity.

Hegel believed that the most important duality was that of master and slave, or business owner and worker, aka bourgeois and proletariat, which became the inspiration for the Communist Manifesto of Marx and Engels in the mid-19th Century. (more…)

Should We Ban Fracking? Here’s a wonderful, well-balanced discussion on an extremely important subject: placing a ban on fracking.  As the author correctly states, natural gas is often used to offset coal, which, as he explains, represents double the greenhouse gas emissions per BTU as compared to gas.  (more…)

Growth of Renewable Energy Far Exceeds PredictionsOne of the central themes here at 2GreenEnergy is that the rapid migration to renewable energy is happening right in front of our eyes.  I’m reminded of the UK’s Duke of Edinburgh’s (pictured left) position on wind turbines (“They don’t work.”), which carries the same level of absurdity as pointing to plane in the sky and saying, “vehicles that are heavier than air can’t fly.”

Here’s an article that speaks to this very issue: the growth of clean energy is exceeding all expectations.

Climate Change ActivismOne of my email signatures reads: “I won’t be the dad who knew, but did nothing.”  And sure, I’m doing what I can to broaden my limited exposure and communicate the truth about climate change and the urgency associated with it, promoting a spirit of cooperation, compassion and foresightedness.  Is what I’m doing effective?  That’s hard to know.

What’s easy to see, however, is that Bill Nye “the Science Guy” is a fabulously effective agent in calling for a worldwide effort to deal with global warming before it’s too late.  (more…)

Car Bumper-Stickers Provide Insight Into the Make-Up of the CommunityA few times a week, I take a run on a beach here in Santa Barbara, and I’m always amused by the bumper-stickers on the cars in the parking lot.  To get the joke of the first one, you need to know that dogs are welcome on this beach, and on a nice day, there are many dozens of them frolicking together, chasing tennis balls into the ocean, and generally having a wonderful time with their human partners and each other.
