A few weeks after Republican Florida governor Ron DeSantis thumbed his nose at the scientific community by reopening his state’s beaches and nonessential businesses, and there had been no noticeable uptick in COVID-19 cases, the conservative press began its celebratory ridicule of those who still trust science.  On May 20, 2020, The National Review wrote an article entitled: Where Does Ron DeSantis Go to Get His Apology? One final note on the Tulsa rally.  After subtracting out the plain-clothes security, Trump’s 2020 campaign staff, and about 2500 paid actors, it appears that the actual total of real fans at the rally was less then 1600.

Among whom we have this happy family, featuring a new mother (sans mask) and her three-week-old infant.  Well, let’s give her a break: she’s not exhaling cigarette smoke into the baby’s face.

Unfortunately, I can’t find that portrait of a smiling Charles Darwin, captioned by, “Shhhh!  I got this.”

Some of the short videos on the pros and cons of renewable energy that I made back in 2012 have gotten a decent number of views; the one below has over 166K.  Unfortunately, most of these people aren’t exactly the audience I was hoping to target, i.e., fairly well informed people with an active interest in the business side of renewables. Regarding the six members of Trump’s campaign team who recently tested positive for COVID-19, a reader remarks, “That’s six steps closer to herd immunity.”

I feel compelled to clarify this. (more…)

What happens when the world’s 1.2 billion Catholics divest their portfolios from fossil fuels (and, of course, weapons of war)?  It appears that we’re about to find out.  In his letter to all Catholic Bishops, “Laudato Si,” Pope Francis urges all of the faith to take care of their environment by helping the phasing out of fossil fuels as soon as practically possible. What comes out of Trump’s mouth is a strange blend of falsehood and truth.  Yes, occasionally he tells the truth, but generally at the least opportune moment.

America is experiencing several watershed events unfolding around us, and questions abound, e.g., can we make a radical change in policing?

Many are cynical, skeptical that wholesale changes in anything in this country never happen.  Maybe they’re right; we’ll see. (more…)

Here’s another one of those clean energy concepts that falls under the category: “will ‘work,’ but would be so ridiculously expensive that it will never be built.”  It’s an idea in the energy storage space that’s a variant of “advanced rail,” using surplus energy to move masses uphill against the force of gravity, and then recovering some of that energy when the masses are allowed to return back down.

If this class of concepts is to have any legitimacy, it must lie in their simplicity.  That’s where this particular idea completely falls apart.

Question:  There are two unique but related things about the small town of Verkhoyansk in Siberia, about 50 miles north of the Arctic Circle.  What are they?

Answer: Can be found at Clean Energy Answers.

Relevance: If climate change weren’t a reality, this wouldn’t be happening.

Opinion: That 1300 people choose to live in the middle of nowhere under conditions like these is probably the result of the horrific quality of life afforded to most Russians.
