Ike’s statement here reminds us of how thoroughly we’ve lost our way.

First, the U.S. military is the ultimate entitlement.  Nothing whatsoever is ever done to curtail its growth.  We call it our “Defense Department,” but it’s used to intimidate and/or attack various groups all around the globe.

Second, we have an entire political party now that couldn’t care less about those who are cold or hungry.

This makes me smile, because it’s precisely the conversation my Trump-supporting mother and I have on the subject.  It’s true, Trump has congressional Republicans’ support at this moment in time.  And that will remain the case…..until it doesn’t anymore.

More than 90% of the energy storage in the United States today is pumped hydro, using surplus energy to pump water uphill, and harvesting that energy by releasing the water to flow downhill through a turbine.  There are several variations on that theme that have some level of merit, e.g., ARES (Advanced Rail Energy Storage), that replaces water in a pipe with heavy train cars on a rail track. I’ve seen the argument at the left before, and I find it compelling.

Large marine vessels powered by bunker diesel have horrendous environmental footprints.

That’s why it’s such excellent news that government-owned Washington State Ferries, the second-largest ferry system in the world, is switching from diesel to batteries amid a growing trend toward electrification in shipping.  From the GreenTech Media article linked above:
