Implied in the meme here is the notion that the fossil fuel industry is good for the economy, but let’s examine that. It certainly has been true historically, in fact, most of the developments over the past couple hundred years that have made our lives longer, healthier, as well as more pleasant and convenient came as a direct or indirect result of the cheap energy that coal, oil and natural gas provided. Now that’s astonishing. In the Western U.S., the droughts fueled by climate change have resulted in reduced snowfall, which in turn, has damaged the ski industry. It’s like a report I read some time back that concluded unprotected teen sex caused unwanted pregnancies among high school girls.
Our civilization may decide to take care of our environment because it’s the right thing to do. More likely, however, we’ll wind up with cleantech because of its relative affordability vs. things like coal-fired power plants. (more…)
